Solar Oxygen Tree
A capstone Project

Presented to- Mr. Anil Gubade

INTRODUCTION
 There can be no denying in the fact
that solar energy is an effective source
of power.
 Despite the need to harness this
energy, very little research has been
conducted to make photovoltaic cells
cost effective and available for
utilization by masses for their various
devices.
 Photovoltaic cells use sunlight and
convert it directly to electricity
without leaving any residual elements
that can pollute the environment.
 Our project will combine processes such as
electrolysis and solar energy.
 This project can generate and release pure
oxygen in the atmosphere using renewable
resources.
 In addition to it, hydrogen gas is produced
which is stored and has potential to be used as
fuel later.
 The waste water from the complexes when filtered and
electrolyzed would not only help in generating oxygen and
hydrogen but also reduce the water pollution to a great
extent.
LIMITATIONS OF USES

 The existing artificial solar trees

usage is just limited to lighting
purposes and cost is also high
which does not lead to mass usage.

 Though people are aware about these

efficient devices, they are unable to
afford these solar trees.
EED OF THE PROJECT

To reduce pollution generated by Increasing of

population:
 The need of the hour is to implement eco-friendlier projects or
plants that can provide advanced technology solutions.

 The total population in India

was estimated at 1298.0 million
people in 2018, according to
the latest census figures.
Looking back, in the year of
1950, India had a population of
359.0 million people.
 Cutting of trees:
However, currently, humans are cutting down billions of trees for different purposes. Thus, the
oxygen levels are falling while the concentration of carbon dioxide in air is increasing.

 Air pollution
Air pollutants leads to respiratory illness in humans
and animals, create acid rains and deplete the ozone
layer.
 Water pollution:
All the waste water from the buildings is gushed out into the sea thereby ruining the
sea life and collection of unnecessary waste in the sea.
 Lack of
Land:
Flat or roof top mountings of PV systems require large area or land.
Scarcity of land is greatest problem in cities and even in villages in India. Planting
trees in urban areas is almost impossible with so many skyscrapers and industries
already being there.

Lack of Land:
• Flat or roof top mountings of PV systems require
large area or land.
OBJECTIVE
• Design and fabrication of solar Tree
• To produce electricity from solar tree.
• Separation of hydrogen and oxygen from water using
electrolysis.
DESCRIPTION

• In this project we are going to fabricate a system

which is powered by electricity from solar energy to
separate oxygen and hydrogen.
• A solar tree consumes much lesser area than the
conventional setup of solar panels. This will be used
for the process of electrolysis.
• Electrolysis is the process of separation of a liquid
into its different chemical constituents by passing an
electric current through it.
• In this, the liquid would be water (H2O) and
electrolysis of water will separate the Hydrogen (H2)
and Oxygen (O2).
• The electricity generated from the solar panels can
be used for lighting and running home appliances
with little modifications.
• Equipment needed For solar tree assembly:
• 5 PV(Photovoltaic) modules
• Servo Motor(Optional)
• Controller
• Battery
• Battery Level Indicator
• LED(Light Emitting Diode)
• MCB(Miniature Circuit Breakers)
• LDR(optional)
• Wiring system
• Equipment needed For Electrolysis process:
• A plastic container( as per requirement)
• 2 water canisters (or just 2 big bottles)
• 2 small bottles (airtight)
• 2 copper or steel electrodes
• Storage unit for hydrogen
• NaOH or KOH pellets
• Piping system
METHODOLOGY

• The Solar panels are to be placed on 5 branches which

would be held together by a pillar or rod of 5 ft. Each
branch would carry 1 module.
• we propose the use of a servo motor which would be
connected to each of the modules and to the
controller.
• The solar energy would be converted in to electricity
and would be used to charge rechargeable batteries.
We plan to use a battery of 12V. The electricity output
would be in DC
• An Electrolysis kit would be placed leaving some
space under the battery or next to the solar tree. The
kit would contain some water, with two electrodes
inside it.
• The electrodes will be connected to the battery and
LED is also connected to the battery.
• Between the connection of battery and electrolysis
kit, there would be a MCB for safety purposes.
• The electrolysis process would require 6V as the
normal electrolysis is done at this voltage.
• Before the beginning the electrolysis process, NaOH
pellets or KOH would be added to the water. This acts
as a catalyst for the electrolysis process.
• When Direct current is passed in the water through
the electrodes, the water molecules will start
separating into molecules of Hydrogen and Oxygen.
• The Hydrogen can be collected and stored in
compressed state and can be used as a fuel in the
near future. They can also be stored in Hydrogen fuel
cells. The oxygen would be released into the
atmosphere to reduce the carbon footprint.
