Prefixes: A prefix is a word compose of two words;

Definition: A prefix is a letter or group of letters added in the beginning of a

Im+possible= Impossible
Un+able= Unable
Dis+agree= Disagree
Il+legal= Illegal
Ir+responsible= Irresponsible

Meanings of some Prefixes:

1. ‘Im’, ‘Ir’, ‘In’, and ‘Il’, contain the meaning of negation.


2. ‘Un’ contains the meaning of opposite.
3. ‘Re’ contains the meaning of again.
4. ‘Dis’ contains the meaning of reverse.
5. ‘Inter’ contains the meaning of between.
6. ‘Anti’ contains the meaning of against.
Use of Prefixes:
 Prefix is a letter or group of letters which is basically used to
modify the meaning of a word.
It is also used to make a word negative or opposite.

Hyphen (-) used in prefixes:


However, in some cases, a hyphen is used to separate the
prefix from the base word.
Examples: non-stop , super-hero , post war , anti-
government etc.
Ex-A. Fill in the blanks with words formed by adding prefixes to
the words given in brackets:
1. Though we played very well, we were unlucky and lost the
match.
2. Amir’s answer to the question is incorrect.
3. The cooking oil was tested and found to be impure.
4. If you do something illegal you will be punished.
