Definiton of Sentence: The sentence is a group of words that contains a
subject and a verb and makes complete sense by itself without
depending on any other word or group of words.
Example:
. He played football in the morning.
It has a subject He and a verb played and makes a complete sense by
itself.
Definition of Phrase: A phrase is a group of words that does not contain
a subject and a verb and does not make a complete sense.
Examples:
. In the morning
. At school
. Across the road
. Behind the tree
Use of phrase in a sentence:

. He exercises in the morning.


. Ahmed has reached at station.
. Twelve horses pulled a carriage across the road
. John is hiding behind the tree.
Definition of Clause: A clause is a group of words that contains a subject
and a verb and is a part of Sentence.
There are two types of clauses;

1. Main clause/Independent clause: It is a complete sentence. It can stand


alone to express a complete thought. It doesn’t depend on other words.
Examples:
. He wants some new toys.
. Marie likes cats.
. John is a good football player.
Subordinate clause/Dependent clause: It contains a subject and a verb
but does not express a complete thought. It depends on other words.
Examples:
. When it was raining
. Because you were late
. Before you go to bed
Ex-A. Read the following and decide whether they are phrase, clause, or
