General Overview of the CISG

Brief History

The CISG was developed by UNCITRAL and signed


in Vienna in 1980
 The CISG replaced the less successful ULIS
• Went into force in January 1988
As of December 29, 2015, UNCITRAL reports that
84 States have adopted the CISG
From the UNCITRAL website: “The purpose of the
CISG is to provide a modern, uniform and fair
regime for contracts for the international sale of
goods.”
