A stylistic legacy of the Industrial


Revolution
Background
As the building activity
following the Industrial
revolution seemed to be
dominated by engineers
Architects and Designers
looked at ways to create
bring back the architecture of
Stylistics. It is in this scenario
that Art Nouveau literally
meaning a new Style was
born.

However it freed itself from


the typical dominat
characgters of ealier historic
styles.
Regional Variations
 The style took on
various forms at various
countries in Europe
ranging from the
extreme Curvilinear in
France( style Nouille)
and Belgium

 Geometric in Austria
and Scotland
Use of Iron
 Inspired by the work of
Viollet le Duc the style also
tried to use contemporary
material most notably iron for
artistic expression.

 In Paris the Metro stations


and signage often used cast
iron Art Nouveau detailing
designed by Hector Guimard.
Victor Horta– Tassel house

 The Best example –


shows a refreshing
Interior Design.

 Curvilinear vegetative
form have been used
as a recurrent feature

developed as a more
restrained geometric
character in stark
contrast to vegetative
curves of Art

 A Reactionist to these architectural styles . Loos spent a considerable


part of adult life in America as was highly impressed by the stark
functionality of the humble American homes. He believed that
contemporary age florid decoration was irrelevant and said the
 “ Ornament is crime”
