Present Simple

WE USE THE SIMPLE PRESENT TO TALK ABOUT “ROUTINES” OR “ALL THE TIME”
ACTIVITIES.
EXAMPLES:
ROSA EATS PASTA ALL THE WEEKENDS. ROSA COME PASTA TODOS LOS FINES DE SEMANA.

ANGIE CLEANS THE FURNITURE EVERY DAY. ANGIE LIMPIA LOS MUEBLES TODOS LOS DÍAS.

THEY READ THREE BOOKS PER MONTH. ELLOS LEEN TRES LIBROS POR MES.

WE SPEAK ENGLISH EVERY CLASS. NOSOTROS HABLAMOS INGLÉS EN CADA CLASE.

THE SYNTAX IS: SUBJECT + VERB IN PRESENT + COMPLEMENT


Examples:
 David speaks German and French as well.
 They organize the events all the time.
Notice that when we use the third person of singular we must change the verb ending to “s” or “es”.
The rules are simple.
All the verbs must add an “s” at the end except in the following cases:
Verbs ended in:

“ss” we add “es” example: Kiss = Kisses


“sh” we add “es” example: Wash = Washes
“zz” we add “es” example: Buzz = Buzzes
“ch” we add “es” example: Watch = Watches
“x” we add “es” example: Fix = Fixes
“o” we add “es” example: Go = Goes
“y” we add “s” example: Play = Plays
“y” we add “ies” example: Study = Studies
Negative form
Subject + do / does + not + verb in present + complement
Examples:
I do not study French. Do not = Don’t
(don’t)
Does not = Doesn’t
We do not play tennis.
(don’t) REMEMBER:
DO: I, YOU, WE, THEY
He does not cook chicken.
(doesn’t) DOES: HE, SHE, IT

Caroline does not eat seafood.

They do not play rugby.

Interrogative form
Do / does + Subject + verb in present + complement + ?
Examples:
Do you study French? (+)Yes, I do. (-) No, I don’t

Do we play tennis? (+)Yes, you do. (-) No, you don’t

Does she cook a delicious chicken? (+)Yes, she does. (-) No, she doesn’t.

Does Thomas eat seafood? (+)Yes, he does. (-) No, he doesn’t.

Do they play rugby? (+)Yes, they do. (-) No, they don’t.
Interrogative form with WH -words
WH- word + do / does + Subject + verb in present + complement + ?
When, where, why, how (often), who, which
Examples:
Where do you study English? I study English at IPT.

When do you play tennis? I play tennis on Thursdays.

Where does Thomas eat seafood? He eats seafood in a fancy restaurant.

How often do they play rugby? They play rugby twice a week.
Who do you work with?. I work with María and Carol.
