Simple Present Tense

1. Definition of Simple Present Tense


Simple present tense is tense that are used when an event is happening right now or an event that
happens repeatedly (habit) is done every day. Simple present tense verbs after of third personal
pronoun subject will have an addition of s/es. Typical time expressions with the simple present are
always, often, usually, sometimes, ever/never, every day, every week, once, twice, on Friday, in the
morning, at ten o’clock, etc.

2. Function and Example


Simple present tense is used to express habits, general truths, repeated actions, unchanging situations,
emotions, and wishes. For example:
 I walk so fast (habit)
 Gravity causes objects to fall to the ground (general truth)
 The sun rises in the east and sets in the west (unchanging situation).
 I brush my teeth twice a day (repeated action)
Additionally, the simple present tense is used to give instructions or directions, express fixed
arrangements, and to express future time after some conjunctions. For example:
 Press the power button to turn on the device (instructions)
 Their wedding is taking place next week (fixed arrangement)
 I plan to live abroad once I graduate from college (future time after a conjunction)

3. Element and Formula


a) The elements/components of the simple present tense in English include:
 Subject: The person or thing performing the action.
 Base Form of the Verb: The infinitive form of the verb (without "to").
 -s / -es Ending: Added to the base form of the verb for third-person singular subjects (he/she/it).
For example:
 He plays soccer (Subject: He, Base Form of Verb: play, -s Ending: plays)
 We study English (Subject: We, Base Form of Verb: study)

b) Simple present tense is divided into different formula, such as positive, negative, and interrogative.
 Positive: Subject + Verb (s/es) + Object
 Negative: Subject + Do/Does + not + Verb + object
 Interrogative: Do/Does + Subject + Verb + Object + ?
