RELIABILITY

 Reliability is defined as the probability that a product, system, or service will perform its intended
function adequately for a specified period of time, or will operate in a defined environment without
failure.
 When looking at reliability the most important components that must not be overlooked are :
 Probability,
 Intended function,
 Satisfaction,
 Specific period of time,
 And specified conditions.
 Reliability is the ability of a product to perform as expected over time.
probability

 this is the numerical value

 It’s the probability that the product will function satisfactorily during a particular time.
Intended function

 Products are designed for particular applications and are expected to be able to perfom
those applications.
Specific period of time

 How long the product is expected to last.

Cont

 As products become more complex, the chances that they will not function increases.
 The method of arranging the components affects the reliability of the entire system.
 Components can be arranged in series, parallel or a combination.
design

 The most important aspect of reliability is design

 It should be as simple as possible
 The fewer the numbers of components the greater the reliability
 Another way of achieving reliability is to have a back up or reductant component.
 Use of large factors of safety can increase the reliability of a product.
Production

 The second most important aspect of reliability is the production process

 Emphasis should be placed on those components that are least reliable

dependability
time
contd

 Reliability can also be defined as “how quality changes over time?”

 Reliability shows how well an object maintains its original level of quality over time,
through various conditions.
 Reliability means the quality over the long run
 A product that works for a long period of time is a reliasble one.
dependability

 Dependability in quality control is the degree to which an item is capable of performing

its required function at any randomly chosen time during its specified operating period,
disregarding non operation related influences.
Dependability can be broken down into three elements:
 Attributes : a way to assess the dependability of a product, system or service.
 Threats : an understanding of the things that can affect the dependability of a product,
system or service.
 Means : ways to increase a system, service or products dependability.
Mean time between failure

 It is the average amount of time that an asset will function before it fails.
 The process of measuring the mean time before failure(MTBF) is a very complex one
and contains many steps that is why most companies do not partake the investigation.
 The process of measuring MTBF is important to the company so that it knows the current
status of reliability in all of its assets.
The process

 Step 1
 You should ensure that all work is covered by a work order, nomatter how minor, and that
the asset information is captured in the computerised mantainance management
system(CMMS) or enterprise asset management system by asset number.
 Step 2 : begin tracking MTBF, focusing on one production area or asset group
 Calculate the MTBF on a daily basis
 For plants : MTBF =TIME / ( number of emergrncy work orders)
 For more mature mantainance organisations: MTBF = TIME/ (number of mantainance
events)
 After the calculation trend the data you find in this production area or asset group daily on
aline graph and post it for everyone to see.
 Once you feel comfortable tracking and trending this one particular asset group step down
to the next level.
 More mature mantainance organisation would want to track and trend all other
mantainance events planned or unplanned.
 Tracking to this level makes everything much easier.
step3

 Continue the process throughout your organisations production areas and maintainable
items.
