Systematic position of Phytophthora :
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Chromista

Classification
Eukaryote

Phylum: Oomycota
Class: Oomycetes
Order: Pythiales
Family: Phythiaceae
Genus: Phytophthora
Species: Phytophthora infestans, P. palmivora,
P. colocasiae, P. cactorum .
Characteristics of Eukarya:

1. Well organize nucleus and

other internal component.

Eukaryote
Chromista

2. Sexual & asexual reproduction.

3. Have membrane bounded

organelles.

4. Presence of rod shaped

chromosomes.
Characteristics of Chromista :

• Plastid are surrounded by four

membranes .

• Zoosporangia produce zoospores by

mitosis .

• Flattened membranous alveoli

(sacs) under outer cell membrane .

• Biflagellate zoospore ,one of the

tinsel type and other of the
whiplash type .
Characterstics of Oomycota :

• Lack chitin in their cell walls .

• Have a life cycle that is dominantly

classification
diploid .
oomycetes

Chromista
Oomycota

Eukaryote
• Occur as saprophyte or as parasites .

• Sexual reproduction by gametangial

contact.

• Coenocytic and sepate hyphae

present.
Characterstics of Oomycetes :
• Oomycetes contain 74 genera
with 580 species.

• They are typically aquatic,

either saprophytic or parasitic

pythiales

• Filamentous, coenocytic and

primitive terms are
unicellular

• The sexual reproduction is at

oogamous type .

• Asexual reproduction is
conducted by biflagellate
Characterstics of Pythiales :

• Mycelium is branched and coenocytic.

• The intercellular hyphae form haustoria.

Oomycota
• In dry weather they reproduced by

direct germination .

• Oogonium shows differentiation into

centered ooplasm (oospore )and
peripheral periplasm.

• Asexual reproduction by zoospore .

• Sexual reproduction is oogamous type .

Characteristics of Pythiaceae :

• Sporangia may germinate

via a germ tube and uptake
nutrients .

• Zoospores motile .

• Sporangiospore are mainly

undifferentiated and
sometimes differentiated

• Have intercellular

Characteristics of Phytophthora :

• Cell wall contain cellulose instead of

chitin.

• Reserve food materials : glycogen,oil

• Produce swimming spores called

zoospores .

• Form lemon shaped sporangia with a

papilla .

• Sporangia can germinate by forming

zoospores or forming a germ tube
directly .
Difference Between Phytophthora and Pythium
Phytophthora Pythium

Especially attacks dicotyledonous Primarily attacks

woody trees,shrubs and monocotlyledonous herbaceous
herbaceous plant. plant ,some of them attacks
mammals,fish,red alge.

Has narrow hyphae,4-6 µm in Has wide hyphae,5-7µm in

diameter. diameter.
Vesicle is not formed. Vesicle is formed.

sporongia lemon shaped. sporongia round shaped.

Amphigynous or paragynous Antheridium club-shaped and
antheridium. paragynous.
Reproduction of Phytophthora:

 Vegetative reproduction .

 Asexual reproduction .

 Sexual reproduction .
Vegetative Reproduction :

• Vegetative reproduction takes place by

chlamydospores .

• A portion of the fungal hyphae goes straight up.

• The protoplast moves to the apical part of the

hyphae .

• Then the apical part of the hyphae is round in

shape and contains nucleus.

• After that when it comes to favorable condition it

produce germ tube and from germ tubes new Figure :Vegetative reproduction
thallus is generated.
Asexual reproduction :
• Takes place by sporangia which are on sporangiophores .

• Sporangiophores are the branched hyphae comes out through the

stomata of the host leaf and bears sporangium at its tip .

Introduction
Asexual rep.
Introduction

oomycetes
pythiaceae
• Each sporangium is oval, multinucleate with short stalk .

Chromista
oomycote
pythiales
• A thin, hyaline papilla is present at the tip of each sporangium .

• At first sporangia are terminal but later on they become lateral due to
the sympodial branching in sporangiophores .

• Sporangium divides into many uninucleate structures. Which later on

form bi-flagellate, kidney-shaped zoospores. These form the new
mycelium on germination .
Sexual Reproduction :

1. It’s of oogamous type and occurs by gemetangial contact .

2. It’s very infrequent reproduction system .

2. Antheridium funnel-shaped and amphigynous condition. The

antheridium changes the structure of the base of the oogonium.

3. The oogonium is a spherical or pear-shaped structure. It is

multinucleate initially but contains only a single nucleus when it
is mature .

4. Admittance of the male nucleus into the oosphere occurs

through a fertilization tube .

5. After germination oospore forms to zoosporangium .

Life Cycle of Phytophthora :
Some Diseases Caused by Phytophthora :
1. Phytophthora infestans : Potato late blight

2. Phytophthora palmivora : Bud rot, fruit rot of coconut, papaya etc.

3. Phytophthora colocasiae : Late blight of colocasiae .

4. Phytophthora cactorum : Root rot on rhododendron .
