Chapter 10

THE PHILIPPINE
ARCHIPELAGO
Objectives
• Identify the location of places on Earth using the latitude
and longitude coordinates system.
• Identify the location of the Philipines in relation to the
continents and oceans of the world
• Describe the major landforms and water forms in the
Philippines
• Recognize that water, soil, rocks, coal and other fossil
fuels are Earth materials that provide people with various
kinds of resources.
• Describe ways of using Earth's natural resources wisely.
• State the effects of the unwise use of Earth's resources.
The Philippine's Georaphical Location

Globe- a spherical model of Earth.

It has the following distinct parts:
1. Equator- an imaginary line that divides Earth into two
equal parts.
2. North Pole- northernmost part of Earth found at the top
portion of the globe
3. South Pole - southernmost part of Earth found at the
bottom portion of the globe
• Latitude lines- lines that run horizontally around the
globe. Also known as parallels because they are
parallel and equidistant to each other.
• Longitude lines-vertical lines in the globe that
converge at the poles; also called meridians.
• International Date Line (IDL) -a line that represents
an imaginary line on Earth's surface and that crosses
Earth from North to South Poles and passes through
the Pacific Ocean.
• Prime meridian- the 0 ° longitude that passes through
Greenwich, England. The left side of the prime
meridian is Tokyo and is considered to be the
eastern part of the Earth.

*Coordinate System - are lines form the

globe's grid where the degrees of the
lines represent specific locations on
Earth.
Locating the Philippines among Continents and Oceans
The table shows the total land area covered by each continent
The continents and oceans of the world
The table shows the five oceans of the world with their corresponding
covered areas and deepest depths

The deepest part of the ocean floor is called OCEANIC TRENCH
