HELICAL MICROMIXER

WITH LAMINAR FLOW

By – Shivam Agarwal

Under the guidance of - Dr. Aneesh A M

DESIGNS USING SOLIDWORKS

 3 designs were made using Solidworks 2017 namely

helical, converging , and diverging.
 The dimensional properties of the design is as follows:-
 Pitch - 20 mm
 Turns - 10.5 starting at 0 degrees
 Spring diameter – 50 mm
 Wire diameter - 10 mm
 Length - 210 mm
 Taper (converging/diverging) – 10 degrees
 Diameter at the other end – 124.06 mm
 At all the three designs, a Y-Bend is connected so as to
facilitate mixing of two different flows through its 2
different openings. The dimensions of the Y-Bend are-
 Angle of bend – 60 degrees
 Length of the Y arms – 104 mm
 Length of the straight arm – 100 mm (equal to the exit pipe
length)

MESH (ANSYS)

 Meshing was done using Ansys-18.

 Use of features like relevance, edge sizing, no of
divisions was made.

 No of nodes - 1628003 and no of elements - 6081949

SIMULATION (ANSYS)

 Simulation was done using Ansys-18 Fluent.

 The model was scaled down by 0.01 in all directions so
as to get the directions in microscale.

 Model – Laminar flow with liquid water at 101325 Pa

 Temperature(hot/cold) – 503/303 Kelvin
 Convergence criteria – 10e(-06)
 Under relaxation factor (Momentum) – 0.1
 Method- SIMPLE (GREEN GAUSE) 2nd Order Upwind
 Initialization - Hybrid
 Simulation for 5 Reynolds Number – 10, 20, 50, 100, 200
 Convergence for these 5 took at – 7562, 7905, 8534,
8072, 10516 respectively.
