In any place where one works, HAZARDS and RISKS are found but, it is the
responsibility of every person to adopt the necessary safety measures to prevent
accidents.

What is hazard?
What is risk?
HAZARD/S
It poses a potential damage,
harm or adverse health affects
someone under certain conditions
at work.
Once the hazard is eliminated,
the effects may be reversible or
irreversible.
RISK/S
It is the chance or probability
that a person will be harmed or
will experience adverse health
effect if exposed to hazard.
QUESTION: How can we control
Risks?
CONTROLLING RISK/S
Practice good hygiene in the
workplace.
Implement the job rotation
schedules, work cycles, and time
maintenance procedures.
Use PPE to reduce the exposure
to hazards.
Common Hazards Found in
the Workplace and Control
Measures
ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
Hazards from electrical
components come from accidental
contact with faulty electrical
equipment and damaged power
cords and switches.
PREVENTION ON
ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
 Put off all electrical appliances
before leaving the workplace.
 Always check any electrical
equipment before use.
 Use heavy duty electrical cord.
Check the cord before plugging.
PREVENTION ON
ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
 Check all electrical outlets
before leaving the workplace.
 Have qualified electrician check
all electrical equipment in
workplace
 Avoid using electrical octopus – a device
using one outlet with a number of cords.
FALLS, SLIPS, TRIPS
FALLS – Use only a ladder or step tool to
reach high shelves.
SLIPS – It is caused by loss of balance
due to little friction between a person’s
foot and the walking surface.
TRIPS – They accidentally happen when you
miss a step, hit an object, and lose your
balance.
PRECAUTIONS ON F, S, T
 Clean up spills right away.
 Use mats on slippery floors.
 Wear appropriate work shoes.
 Improve cleaning methods to prevent
build up of grease.
 Provide enough storage space to avoid
putting materials in aisles or walkways.
 Provide absorbent flooring materials in
the entrance area.
CHEMICAL HAZARD
The use of chemicals in the workplace is
indispensable.
The caregiver should exercise caution in
using chemicals because it causes skin
irritation and respiratory problems.
Information on chemical hazards are found
in the product label and material safety
data sheet (MSDS)
PHYSICAL HAZARD
It involves the activity that requires the
use of force exerted by the caregiver to
lift, push, pull or carry appliances found
in the workplace.
AVOIDING PHYSICAL HAZARD
 Lift the load smoothly, do not jerk.
 Plan the lift before you push.
 Keep the load as close to your body as
possible.
 If an item is too high, use a stepladder
or stool to help you.
 Provide fire extinguisher in the
workplace.
IRE SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE

There should be an emergency exit

route in the workplace. This is the
easiest route which the clients and
caregivers can leave the building
safely.
CONTROL MEASURES
 Keep all escape routes and fire exits
clear. Check regularly to ensure they
are safe to use.
 Fire extinguishers should always be
available and located in specific
location.
 Switch off and unplug all electrical
appliances after every use.
ERGONOMIC HAZARDS
Ergonomics is the science of
designing and arranging things so
that people can use them safely and
easily. It aims to reduce stress,
injuries, and disorders associated
with the space, equipment, furniture,
and physical design of the workplace.
