NILAMBUR PATTULSAV

• Nilambur is a municipality in northern Kerala, about 40 km inland from

Malappuram. Most of the town's residents are engaged in merchant
practices and the surrounding villages are occupied by farmers who grow
rubber, rice, pepper and other spices. The town is close to the Chaliyar
River, is famous for having the oldest teak plantation in the world and
beautiful forests and wildlife. It is situated near the Western Ghats and
within 100 km of the popular hill station,Ooty.
Nilambur Pattu and Kovilakam are the two things associated with Nilambur heritage. Every
year Vettekaran Pattu is held for two weeks in the first weeks of January.The legends say
that every year the tribal people, who used to live in and around the Nilambur forests,
come to pay homage to the royal family of the Nilambur Kovilakam. In Kerala history,
Nilambur Kovilakam played a vital role in Northern Kerala but, at present, the princely
family is just another family. Nilambur Pattulsavam gives the residents the opportunity to
cherish old memories of the Nilambur Kovilakam.

Now Nilambur Pattu became a festival and celebration time more than
cultural event. Peoples from every religion participate in these festivals as
it became a festival of Nilambur.

• PEOPLE FROM ALL RELIGION GATHERS HERE.
• IT PROMOTES RELIGIOUS AND HARMONY AMONG PEOPLES.
• IN EARLER THE TRIBAL PEOLPLES WHO USED TO LIVE IN AND AROUND THE NILAMBUR
FOREST COME TO PAY HOMAGE TO THE ROYAL FAMILY OF NILAMBUR KOVILAKAM.
• DURING THE DARK TIMES WHEN THE JANMI SYSTEM AND CASTEISM WHERE
EXISTED,THE FESTIVAL EXISTED AS A RELEIF FOR THE LOWERCLASS PEOPLES.
• SINCE LOWER AND UPPERCLASS PEOPLE CELEBRATED IT TOGETHER UNANIMOUSLY.

• THE EARLY PATTULSAV IS GIVEN MUCH IMPORTANCE THAN

NOW.
• BUT NOW THOUGH THE LANDLODISM ALL CHANGED AND NEW
TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPED,THERE BECOME A FALL IN THIS
FESTIVAL. SO TO OVERCOME THIS FALL,IN 2005 THE
MUNICIPALITY STARTED TO CELEBRATE THIS FESTIVAL.
• BUT WE CAN’T SEE THE INTENSITY AS THOSE OF BEFORE.

• THROUGH THIS DESIGN WE BRING OUT THE DIGNITY OF THE FESTIVAL AS LIKE THAT
OF BEFORE.
• TRIBALS IN THIS LOCALITY ARE PARTICIPATING AND THEY GET A CHANCE TO LINK
WITH THE PEOPLE.
• THEY GET AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXHIBIT THEIR PRODUCTS INCLUDING
MEDICINES,FOREST PRODUCTS ETC.
• THEY HAVE CHANCES TO PARTICIPATE IN CULTURALS TOO.
• THAT IS TRIBALS ARE GIVEN MUCH IMPORTANCE.
• THE STAGE WE DESIGNED IS OPEN FOR BOTH TRIBALS AND COMMON PEOPLES.

THE MATERIAL USED ARE NATURAL MATERIALS SUCH AS

BAMBOO,WOOD ETC WHICH ARE SUSTAINABLE AND
ECOFRIENDLY.
