WHAT IS
CULTURE?
Culture is an umbrella term which encompasses the social
behavior and norms found in human societies, as well as the
knowledge, beliefs, arts, laws, customs, capabilities, and habits of
the individuals
"Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear
it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or
wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we
behave with loved ones, and a million other things,"
—Cristina De Rossi
What is Culture
Sensitivity?
Begins with a recognition that there are differences between cultures.
These differences are reflected in the way that different groups
communicate and relate to one another.
Culture sensitive is more than awareness that there are differences in
culture in order to interact effectively
A cultural competent person views all people as unique individuals
and realizes that their experience, beliefs, values and language affects
their perception.
