PROCEDURE
THANEAS A/L SUNDRAMURTHI CHELLIAH
ENGINE STARTING PROCEDURE
1) Turn the auxiliary fuel pump on, if aircraft is so equipped
2) Place the mixture control to the position recommended for the engine and carburetor combination being started. As a general rule, the mixture
control should be in the idle cut off position for pressure type carburetors and in the full rich position for float type carburetors.
4) .Leave the preheat or alternate air (carburetor air) control in the cold position to present damage and fire in case of back power to prevent fouling
of the spark plugs, ice formation, and eliminate icing in the induction system.
5) Energise the starter; after the propeller has made at least two complete revolutions, and then turn the ignition switch on. On engines equipped with
induction vibration, turn switch to the both position. When starting on engine that uses an impulse couplingmagneto, turn the ignition switch to
“LEFT”position.Place the ignition switch to start when the magneto incorporates a retard breaker assembly.
6) After the engine is operating smoothly on the primer, move the mixture control to the FULL RICH position. Release the primer as soon as a drop
in RPM indicates that the engine is receiving additional fuel from the carburetor.
7. More the primer switch “ON” intermittently, or prime with one three
strokes of primary pump depending on how the aircraft is equipped .When
the engine begins to fire, hold the primer while gradually opening the
throttle to obtain smooth operation.
9. High power should only be used for sufficient duration to accomplish the
necessary checks, since the angina may not be adequately cooled when the
aircraft is stationary. After all the checks have been carried out the engine
should be cooled by running at the recommended speed
GROUND RUN UP
1. Only qualified persons shall start and/or operate an Aircraft engine at the Airport and/or taxi an
Aircraft on the Airport. Qualified persons include a pilot, an airframe and power plant mechanic, or a
qualified technician licensed by the FAA and qualified to start or operate the engine(s) and/or taxi that
particular type and class of Aircraft.
2. Starting engines shall be prohibited until ground personnel have given proper clearance (if
appropriate) and until all standard safety procedures have been strictly followed.
3. Aircraft engines shall not be started within any structure on the Airport.
4. Any person operating an Aircraft engine in an area that is accessible to the public shall take
precautions to alert and protect the public from hazards incident to such operations.
5. Starting engines shall be prohibited until ground personnel have given proper clearance (if appropriate) and until all standard
safety procedures have been strictly followed.
6. Aircraft controls shall not be left unattended while an Aircraft engine is operating.
3. BELOW 50 % RPM ( C - 5 ' S , MOVE ROTARY SWITCH TO " EMERGENCY TAKE - OFF . " )
6. . CONTINUING TO HOLD TEST SWITCH " ON , ” ADVANCE TO FULL THROTTLE . IF 96 % RPM IS NOT OBTAINED
AT FULL THROTTLE , RETURN TO LINE .
8. OBTAIN TOWER CLEARANCE , HOLD BRAKES AND AD VANCE THROTTLE TO 100 % . IF POWER IS NORMAL ,
TAKE OFF . IF 100 % CANNOT BE OBTAINED , RETURN TO LINE .
