 Every lifeboat shall

be powered by a
compression ignition
engine.

 No engine shall be
used for any lifeboat
if its fuel has a
flashpoint of 43°C or
less (closed cup test)
Official (Open)

 Be provided with either a manual starting system,

or a power starting system with two independent
rechargeable energy sources.

 Any necessary starting aids shall also be provided.

 The engine starting systems and starting aids shall

start the engine at an ambient temperature of -
15°C within 2 minutes of commencing the start
procedure

 The starting systems shall not be impeded by the

engine casing, thwarts or other obstructions
Official (Open)

 be capable of operating for not less than 5

minutes after starting from cold with the
lifeboat out of the water

 be capable of operating when the lifeboat is

flooded up to the centreline of the
crankshaft

 Provision shall be made for ahead and

astern propulsion of the craft.
Official (Open)

 The exhaust pipe shall be so arranged as to

prevent water from entering the engine in
normal operation

 All lifeboats shall be designed with due regard

to the safety of persons in the water and to that
possibility of damage to the propulsion system
by floating debris.
Official (Open)

 The speed of a lifeboat when proceeding ahead in

calm water, when loaded with its full
complement of persons and equipment and with
all engine-powered auxiliary equipment in
operation, shall be at least 6 knots and at least 2
knots when towing a 25-person liferaft loaded
with its full complement of persons and
equipment or its equivalent.

 Sufficient fuel shall be provided to run the

fully loaded lifeboat at 6 knots for a period of
not less than 24 hours.
Official (Open)

 The lifeboat engine, transmission and engine

accessories shall be enclosed in a fire- retardant
casing or other suitable arrangements providing
similar protection.
 Such arrangements shall also protect persons
from coming into accidental contact with hot or
moving parts and protect the engine from
exposure to weather and sea.
 Adequate means shall be provided to reduce the
engine noise.
Official (Open)

 Starter batteries shall be provided with

casings which form a watertight enclosure
around the bottom and sides of the batteries.
 The battery casings shall have a tight fitting
top which provides for necessary gas venting
 Means shall be provided for recharging
lifeboat batteries from the ship's power
supply.
 The electric power supply connection from
the ship to any lifeboat shall be at a voltage
of not exceeding 50 volts direct current at
the lifeboat embarkation station
Official (Open)

 The lifeboat engine and accessories shall be designed

to limit electromagnetic emissions so that engine
operation does not interfere with the operation of
radio life-saving applications used in the lifeboat.
 Means shall be provided for recharging engine-
starting batteries.
 Water-resistant instructions for starting and
operating the engine shall be provided and mounted
in a conspicuous place near the engine starting
controls.

• Generally Diesel Engine – Reliable &

Ease of starting in cold weather
• Either Air Cooled or Water Cooled
• Normally provided with instruction card
and started by Hand
• To run or even start supply of fuel must
be up to the mark

 Oil in the Sump

– Lack of it will Over Heat and Seize up
 Water or an air lock in the system, or a
clogged air intake will prevent Engine
starting

 Get Familiar with:

 Fuel oil filter
 Lub oil filter
 Air intake filter
 Fuel lift pump
 Where is lub oil and gear oil poured?
 Where are the dip stick?
 Where is the fuel oil filled?
 Where is the drain plug placed?
 Where is the main switch?
Official (Open)

 Drain plug in placed.

 Check that the lub oil is between the marks on
dip stick
 Check fuel oil level in fuel tank
 Bleed the fuel system by pumping the fuel lift
pump handle
 Check the steering system
 Propeller free from obstruction

1. Check the Sea Cock is open

2. Check the Overboard Discharge is open
3. Check the Fuel line cocks
4. Open the Throttle to Full
5. Open the De- Compression lever
6. Check the Gear lever is Neutral
Official (Open)

7. Turn the Engine fast by hand and when

speed is gained then close the de-
compression lever, The engine should
now start
8. Adjust the throttle and check the oil
pressure gauge if fitted
9. Check the Overboard discharge

FOR AIRCOOLED ENGINE DISREGARD NO: 1, 2 & 9

Official (Open)

1. Switch on the main battery switch to position ‘1’

2. Check that the fuel cocks are open
3. Put throttle control lever in the neutral position

4. To disengage gears ,Push knob on top of the

control or pull base of lever away from body.
5. Then push throttle lever to ahead position.
6. Pull out stop cable, then push it in again
Official (Open)

8. The engine is started by:

pushing the “Start” button.
or
Turn the key switch to the right (not more then 10
to 15 sec)
warning !! Never use a starter spray or
suchlike as starting aid, as this may cause as
explosion
9. If engine does not fire, change battery switch to
position ‘2’
Official (Open)

8. Immediately after starting the engine, check

that the oil pressure lamp is not lit.
If the lamps for both engine temperature and
battery charging light up together it means that
the alternator is not charging
10. Stop the engine if the alarm sounds and the
lamps light up by turning off key switch to ‘0’
position or by pulling stop control cable
completely out
CAUTION
When engine is shut down, ensure key position
is returned to ‘0’ position.
