 SIMPLE PAST TENSE
USE:
We use the simple past to talk about
actions and situations that happened in
the past ,often with time expressions
such as: ago ,yesterday ,last night ,
last week, last Saturday, etc

NOTE: There are two types of verbs in simple past

tense: regular and irregular.
FORM:
The form of the simple past is the same for
all persons (I,YOU,HE,SHE,IT,WE,YOU,THEY)

 AFFIRMATIVE:

S+V(past)+C
I surfed on-line yesterday.
We enjoyed the movie last night.
You did the English homework last week.
My parents bought groceries last Saturday.
 NEGATIVE:

S+did+not+V(present)+C
I did not surf on-line yesterday.
We didn’t enjoy the movie last night.
You didn’t do the English homework last week.
My parents didn’t buy groceries last Saturday.
 INTERROGATIVE:

Did+S+V(present)+C ?
Did I surf on-line yesterday?
Did we enjoy the movie last night?
Did you do the English homework last week?
Did my parents buy groceries last Saturday?
 Spelling Rules for Regular
Verbs
1st case: Most regular verbs add ED at
the end.

 cook – cooked
 enjoy - enjoyed
 surf - surfed
 watch - watched

2nd case: If the verb ends in vowel E, only
add D.
 create – created
 dance - danced
 die - died
 live - lived

3rd case: If the verb ends in consonant

+Y,change it by IED
 copy-copied
 study - studied
 worry- worried
4th case: If the verb has one syllable ans ends
in a consonant-vowel-consonant combination
(CVC), double the last consonant to add ED.

stop – stopped
rub- rubbed

NOTE: Don’t double final consonants: w,x,y,z
