Let’s Begin!

In The 1970s, an aftershave

product was advertised for
men in the Middle East, and
the ad showed a photo of a
man and his dog. The product
dramatically failed in Islamic
countries, where dogs are
considered unclean.
A golf ball manufacturing
company sold their products
in packs of four for easy
purchase in Japan. But the
items sold in “fours” became
unpopular because the word
“four” sounds like the word
“death” in Japanese.
CULTURE is the
characteristics and
knowledge of a
particular group of
people encompassing
language, religion, social
habits, and etc.
Scenario:
You are a citizen of your
fictional country, and you
are attending a dinner party
with nationalities. Your goal
is to mingle with and
introduce yourself and your
fictional country to others.
Questions:

1. Was there a difference

between your group’s
behavior and others?
2. How did you handle
differences between your
behaviors?
INTERCULTURAL
COMMUNICATION
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the
students should be able to:
a. define intercultural communication;
b. identify different factors that affect
intercultural communication;
c. cite situations of intercultural
communication they have been
involved to; and
d. reflect on the lessons learned in this
unit
Intercultural Communication
It happens when individuals
interact, negotiate, and create
meanings, while bringing in
their varied cultural
backgrounds (Ting-Toomey,
1999)
Intercultural Communication

It pertains to
communication among
people from different
nationalities.
(Gudykunst, 2003)
Intercultural Communication
It takes place when people
draw from their cultural
identity to understand
values, prejudices,
language, attitudes, and
relationships.(Gudykunst,
2003)
Sometimes, intercultural
communication can flow
smoothly and become very
interesting for a cross-
cultural group. However,
things may not go as
planned when
communication is disrupted
by cultural collisions.
When do we
consider someone
as a competent
intercultural
communicator?
What would
you do when
you meet people
from other
countries?
Can you cite
situations of
intercultural
communication
you have been
involved to?
How was your experience when
you have talked to:

a. a member of the opposite sex?

b. someone older or younger than
you?
c. a person from a different
religion?
