What is Machu Picchu?
 More than 7,000 feet
above sea level in the
Andes Mountains,
Machu Picchu is the
most visited tourist
destination in Peru. It is
a 15th-centuary Incan
city of sparkling granite
situated between 2
towering Andean peaks.
Often mistakenly referred to
as the "Lost City of the
Incas" (a title more
accurately applied to
Vilcabamba), it is the most
familiar icon of Inca
civilization.This place was
built at the peak around
1450AD . Its construction
appears to date to the
period of the two great Inca
rulers, Pachacutec Inca
Yupanqui and Túpac Inca
Yupanqui.
Tupac Inca
 Most archaeologists believe that
Machu Picchu was constructed
as an estate for the Inca emperor
Pachacutec (1438–1472).

 There is a consensus among

them that Pachacutec ordered
the construction of the royal
estate for himself, most likely
after his successful military
campaign.

The place was rediscovered by the
archaeologist Hiram Bingham

Three primary
structures:

Intihuatana

The Temple of the Sun,

The Room of the Three

Windows.
During its use as a royal estate, it is estimated that no more
than 750 people lived there at a time, most people being
support staff who lived there permanently
One of the seven wonders
 Machu Picchu was
declared a Peruvian
Historic Sanctuary in 1981
and a UNESCO
World Heritage Site in 1983
and in 2007 was voted one
of the
New Seven Wonders of the
World
in a worldwide Internet
poll.[16]
Some interesting facts
 Machu Picchu was an astronomical
observatory, and its sacred Intihuatana
stone accurately indicates the two
equinoxes. Twice a year, the sun sits
directly over the stone creating no
shadow.

Many different theories exist about

Machu Picchu’s purpose—a royal estate
and a secret ceremonial center among
them.

Machu Picchu is made up of more than

150 buildings ranging from baths and
houses to temples and sanctuaries.

In the Quechua Indian language,

“Machu Picchu” means “Old Peak” or
“Old Mountain.”
