UNIT I
INTRODUCTION & PHYSICAL LAYER
TOPIC – NETWORKS
• Definition: A network is the interconnection of a set of devices
capable of communication. A Device can be a host, computer, laptop,
workstation and cellular phone.
• Network Criteria:
Performance

Reliability

Security

TOPIC – NETWORKS
Network Criteria – Performance
• This criteria can be evaluated in many ways.
• Performance of a network includes transit time and response time.
Transit time is the amount of time required for a message to travel from one
device to another.
Response time is the elapsed time between an inquiry and a response.
Performance of a network also depends on:
 No of users.
 Type of transmission media.
 Hardware and Software.
Number of users: Having a large number of concurrent users can slow the
response time in the network.

TOPIC – NETWORKS
Network Criteria – Performance
• Performance of a network
 Type of Transmission medium: The medium defines the path/speed at which
the data can travel through the connection. Proper transmission medium
must be selected.
 Hardware: Higher speed computer with greater storage provides better
performance.
 Software: Software is used to process the data. The processing of data
involves
 Moving a message from one node to another node.
 Transform the raw data into transmittable signals.

Network Criteria – Reliability
• Network Reliability is measured by the frequency of failure, the time
it takes to recover from the failure and the robustness in a catastrophe.

Network Criteria - Security

• Network Security includes protecting data from unauthorized access,
protecting the data from damage and procedures for recovery from
breaches.
UNIT I
INTRODUCTION & PHYSICAL LAYER
TOPIC – TRANSMISSION MODE
• Definition: Transmission mode is used to define the direction of signal flow
between two linked devices.
• Three types of modes are:
a. Simplex mode:
 Communication is unidirectional.
 Among two nodes, only one node can transmit, the other node can only receive.
 Eg: Radio broadcasting, television broadcasting.
b. Half Duplex mode:
 Both nodes can send and receive, but not at the same time.
 Eg: Walkie - talkie
c. Full Duplex mode:
• Both nodes can send and receive simultaneously.
• Eg: Whatsapp.

TOPIC – CATEORIES OF NETWORK
• Categories of Network:
Local area network.
Metropolitan area network.
Wide area network.
• Local Area Network(LAN):
Privately owned and links the devices in a single office, building or campus.
Depending on the needs the LAN consists of two PC’s or it can extend
throughout a company.
LANs are designed to allow resources to be shared between personal
computers

TOPIC – CATEORIES OF NETWORK
• Local Area Network:
One of the computer may be given a larger capacity disk drive and may
become a server to other clients.
UNIT I
INTRODUCTION & PHYSICAL LAYER
TOPIC – CATEORIES OF NETWORK
• Metropolitan Area Network (MAN):
Designed to extend over an entire city.
It may be a single network or collection of number of LAN’s connected a
large network.
Eg: A company can use MAN to connect the LAN’s in all of its office
throughout a city.
UNIT I
INTRODUCTION & PHYSICAL LAYER
TOPIC – CATEORIES OF NETWORK
• Wide Area Network(WAN):
Provides long distance transmission of data over a geographical areas. All the
user programs are installed on host.
Hosts are connected by subnets. Subnets consists of transmission lines and
switching elements.
Transmission lines are used to transfer between two machines.
Switching elements are used to connect transmission lines.
Switching elements are called as routers.
