BACKGROUND
The First Coiled Spring
It wasn’t until 1763 when R. Treadwell invented the first ever coiled spring.  It was a British patent,
number 792.  It was considered a step up from the leaf spring. The leaf spring had to be lubricated often
and was quite squeaking. The best was that the spring didn’t have to be spread apart.
The word coil meant to wind cylindrically or spirally. In the year 1857 the first ever steel  coil spring was
invented. It was used for chair seats.
Ever since the inventions of these coil springs, springs have been used in everything from shoes to
trampolines. Springs help make the car industry what it is today. Springs are used in every type of
machinery and they really do help make the world go around.

In these type of springs the major stresses is torsional shear stress due to twisting. They
are both used in tension and compression. Spiral springs are made of flat strip of metal
wound in the form of spiral and loaded in torsion. In this the major stresses are tensile
and compression due to bending.
INTRODUCTION

Helical spring is a device, is used to store some energy so that when the energy is needed, it
is released.

They can return their original shape when the force is released.

It is defined as elastic body.

OBJECTIVES
The overall objectives was to investigate the modulus of rigidity, deflection and maximum shear
stress, flexibility of helical spring.

Some specific objectives are:

01.To observe the load deflection relationship of the helical spring.
02.To determine some it’s physical properties.
03.To find the stiffness of the spring.
04.To compare the theoretical stiffness with the observed value.
04.To draw a curve by plotting load against deflection and find the modulus of rigidity of the
spring materials

CONCLUSION
Spring is made of an elastic materials that changes in shape
or deform when a force is applied to it

There are a number of other spring shapes used in

engineering field
DISCUSSION
The curve load vs deflection shows that under loading faces increases the deflection also increases. At the
load also increases 5000 N the maximum deflection occur That is the value of 15.47 mm.so the deflection is
linear .

RECOMMENDATION
The helical spring is very strong in compressive force. In civil engineering it is used in the bridge where impulse
load rapidly up and down so it is very helpful to resist the impulse load.
