designed to resist flexural stress
Mainly placed horizontally in the structure
Governing force
Shear force
Bending moment
Torsion
 Beam subjected to
Shear force & Bending
moment

Beam subjected to
torsion
TYPES OF BEAM

 Based on the placement

of reinforcement:

 Based on the shape :

Rectangular Beam T Beam L Beam I Beam

TYPES OF BEAM

 According to design:  According to Equilibrium

 Balanced Beam  Statically Determinate Beam
 Under Reinforced Beam  Statically Indeterminate Beam
 Over Reinforced Beam

 Based on support condition

Simply supported beam Cantilever beam Semi-continuous beam

TYPES OF BEAM

Fixed ended beam Propped cantilever Beam

Over hanging beam Continuous beam

TYPES OF BEAM

 Spandrel beam:
SIZE OF BEAM

(BNBC-8.3.4)

b
 The width shall not be less than 10″ (250 mm)

 b/h ≥ 0.3
 The width shall not be more than the width of the h
supporting member.

 Beam span not less than 3h .

Depth of Beam

 Depth of beam considering serviceability (Deflection) condition

(According to BNBC 6.2.10)
Supporting Simply Both Ends One End Cantilever
Condition Continuous continuous

Depth l/16 l/21 l/18.5 l/8

Here l is span length of beam

 Deflection of Cantilever and simply supported beam is greater than others so

thickness is high.
REINFORCEMENT IN BEAM

Reinforcement is
provided when beam is
subjected on flexural
stress
Plain concrete is very weak in
resisting flexural stress.

2. Spacing Of Bars, 6. Covering of Reinforcement,
3. Placement of Bars, 7. Placement of Bars at the Joint of Beam and
4. Lapping and Curtailment of bars, Columns.
5. Anchorage and Development length of bar,
REINFORCEMENT IN BEAM
 Types of the Reinforcement in Beam:

 Longitudinal Reinforcement:  Transverse Reinforcement:

Resist flexural, shear and torsional stress. Resist shear and diagonal tension,
Hold main bar in right place,
Reduce shear crack.
REINFORCEMENT IN BEAM
  Minimum Reinforcement (ACI : 10.5.1) : bw
As200bw d/fy.

 If the beam is T beam then bw replaced by either 2bw or the width

of the flange whichever is smaller.
(ACI : 10.5.2)
d
 (BNBC : 8.3.4.2)

 Maximum Reinforcement (BNBC: 8.3.4.2 ) :

Maximum steel ratio, ⍴𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 0.75 ⍴𝑏 but not more than 0.025,
where ⍴𝑏 = balanced steel ratio.
At least two bars shall be provided continuously at top and bottom. As
For Bick Aggregate concrete ⍴ shall be increased 50%.
SPACING OF LONGITUDINAL BAR

Minimum Clear Spacing between longitudinal bars in Column (ACI code 7.6.1) :
The minimum spacing is the larger of 1 in, a bar diameter, or 1.33 times the
maximum aggregate size.
REINFORCEMENT IN BEAM
 Required Size of Stirrup:

o According to ACI code 7.10.5: o According to BNBC 8.1.11.1:

 Main bar: Up to #10 or 32mmø,  Main bar: Up to 30mmø
Stirrup : #3 or 10mmø. Stirrup :10mmø.
 Main bar: Greater than #10 or 32mmø  Main bar: 35mmø to 55mmø and Bundled bar
and Bundled bar, Stirrup : 12mmø
Stirrup : #4 or 12mmø.
 Stirrup’s Hooks:
 Shape of Stirrup:
MINIMUM SPACING OF STIRRUP IN BEAM

 MAXIMUM SPACING (Mid Span) •SPACING:BNBC

• d/2 8.3.10.4
• 16 X Minimum Dia of Main Bar
• 48 X Dia of Stirrup
• The first stirrup shall be located not more than 50 mm from the
supporting face.
PLACEMENT OF STIRRUP
Maximum spacing ( For Hoops )
:
 d/4
 8 X Minimum dia of Main bar
 24 X dia of stirrup
 Minimum 300 mm
Stirrup shall not be placed at more than d/2 throughout the length of the
member

Hook of stirrup should be

provided in compression
zone.
ANCHORAGE AND DEVELOPMENT LENGTH

Development Length is provided to transfer Anchorage Length is one type of

the load from steel to concrete development Length provided inside the or
support end.
