TENSILE STRENGTH OF
COMPACTED GAZIPUR CLAY SOIL
INTRODUCTION

soil is the most important materials for the structure which

support the structure as a foundation to transfer the load of it.
Generally compressive strength of soil is consider for the
design of a foundation but it also has tensile strength .
Tensile strength is very small with compare to compressive
strength . For earth made vertical structure like dam,
embankment, weir usually fail in tensile strength. So it is
important to know tensile strength of soil in different
moisture content.
NECESSITY

The research is required to safe hydraulic earth structure

due to failure of tensile strength . The tensile strength of soil
is lower, in very large amount or in very small amount of
moisture content . Due to insufficient tensile strength of clay
soil occurs several fine cracks on earth structure . The fine
cracks indicates the initial failure of the structure . So that ,
tensile strength of soil is a major mechanical parameter
controlling the development of tensile crack , which is
commonly encountered in may earth structure.
OBJECTIVE

I. To control the development of tensile crack on hydraulic

structure which is made of earth .

II. To find out the tensile strength of clay soil .

III.To find out the variation of tensile strength of soil in

different degree of saturation .

IV. To measure the ultimate tensile strength of clay soil

from the graph .
METHODOLOGY

The test can be derived in two method i.e.

I. Indirect tension method
II. Direct tension method
DIRECT TENSION

The tensile load is directly applied to the two ends of a soil

specimen. Such that tests are generally preferred as the
tensile stress and strength can be directly obtained. Both the
tensile load and displacement can be controlled, depending
on tests device.

We will follow the direct tension method to find out tensile

strength of compacted clay specimen. Because it is more
easier then indirect tension method.
TEST PROCEDURES

The tensile load T acting on the specimen is determined from the

axial load N. The tensile stress σ was then computed by dividing
the tensile load by the cross - sectional area A at the specimen's
neck, which is equal to with x height ( 20 mm x 10 mm ) .
σ = T/A
The peak tensile stress is defined herein the specimen at failure .
the water content of the specimens after testing should be
measured and compare with initial values. Very slight variation
will be observed and will be assumed negligible .
TEST PROGRAMS

The clay soil used in this study was collected from the DESHI
PADA area of GAZIPUR city. The collected clay soil was air
dried , crushed , and sieved at #10 NO. when the sample was
collected from the site there was 20% moisture and after air dried
it is obtaining 5% moisture. stored the sample in dry space.

Test program will be done in three steps

I. Study of physical properties of soil
II. Sample preparation
III. Tensile strength of clay soil
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

The following test we have done to determine the physical

properties of soil .

•Dispersion test
•Specific gravity
•Consistency limit
•USCS classification
•Compaction study
•Grain size analysis
•unconfined compressive strength
. SAMPLE PREPARATION

To prepare the sample for testing a mold is made in a perfect shape and size.
The size of the mold (length x weigh x height ) = ( 88 mm x 88 mm x 50.8 mm
) respectively . To reach the sample in desire density we need to compact the
sample in one layer from target height 10 mm by keeping the sample within the
mold on flat surface. When it is come in desire density need to place sample
into the testing device by pushing it softly. It is ensured that, the weight and
thickness of the neck of the sample will be 30 mm x 25.4 mm respectively .
Picture of mold is given below.

TENSILE STRENGTH

The air dried sample obtaining 5% moisture and maximum dry

density is 1.75 also has 16% moisture . Maximum tensile
strength would be in maximum dry density . So, need to start
the experiment before 16% and we found liquid limit in 46 % .
So, the range of moisture content should be 8% - 48% at a 4%
interval also in three different dry density like as (1.5 , 1.6 and
1.7) . We have to make 33 nos. Sample for our experiment at
last. By mixing sample in different moisture need to keep for 2
days for saturation . To record data , data sheet is given below.

We have taken help from Microsoft word to represent the test calculation
and attach the relative table , which is not possible in power point
cause of limited space.
