APPLICATION OF FMS IN AIRCRAFT

MANUFACTURING
TEAM MEMBER :
DEFINITION :

FMS  A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is a manufacturing

system in which there is some amount of flexibility that allows
the system to react in case of changes, whether predicted or
Flexible unpredicted.
Manufacture  This flexibility is generally considered to fall into two

System categories(routing flexibility and machine flexibility), which

both contain numerous subcategories .

.
ADVANTAGES:

Reduced manufacturing cost Reduced parts inventories

Lower cost per unit produced Adaptability to CAD/CAM

operations
Greater labor productivity
Shorter lead times
Greater machine efficiency
Improved efficiency
Improved quality
Increase production rate
Increased system reliability

COMPANY PROFILE OF STARRAG:

Starrag is a global technology leader in

manufacturing high-precision machine
tools.
Principle customers are internationally
active companies in the Aerospace,
Energy, Transportation and Industrial
sectors.
Starrag has first designed, developed and
fully integrated a FMS for the automated
complete machining of inconel and
titanium airfoil variable guide vanes from
forging to ready for assembly.  FMS 1989

HISTORY OF STRRAG:

Producing copy milling

machines for turbine, aircraft
and mold manufacturing
FMS LAYOUT :

The FMS system is based around seven Starrag LX 021 machining centers, which complete
all blade turning and milling, as well as blade threading/parting off.

Aside from the seven LX 021 machines with a four-pallet buffer station, there are, for
instance, two Cellro washing machines, two Flexmill grinding/polishing machines with
ABB six-axis robots and two Hexagon-Leitz co-ordinate measuring machines with three-
pallet buffer.

A tower storage magazine holds workpieces, their fixtures and robot grippers, as well as
1,500 blades to permit such extensive unmanned running times. In addition, there are two
buffer stations for fixtures and two robot gripper stations.

PRODUCTION BENEFITES:

Individual machining of each 160 mm long

blade completed in under 50 mins compared
to hours;
Saving the associated operator presence of at
least one person per machine for each shift;
24/7 operation;
Guaranteed finished machined and ready-to-
assemble output of every completed blade;
100 % inspection conformance and QC
certificates for each blade;

Under the production condition of FM S, the process preparation of aircraft structural parts is completed by the
CAD /CAPP /CAM integrated system. The transfer of part model data replaces the transfer of die line sample data.
The machining error of parts is controlled by the model data. After the integrated system of CAD/CAPP/CAM is
adopted in the process preparation of FM S, the process procedures and numerical control programs are generated by
computer aided, which greatly improves the efficiency, shortens the process preparation time, and thus shortens the
auxiliary time of parts manufacturing. At the same time, due to the reduction of many artificial links in the process of
process preparation, the error rate is also reduced
