THE WAY OF

TAO AS GUIDE
IN SOCIETY
• Taoism’s concept of man is based on the understanding of
the whole universe following certain universal and
unchanging laws. We must comprehend these unchanging
laws and act accordingly so that we do not act with prejudice
and fail in our life. Understanding the laws of the Tao is a key
to being a sage or a virtuous man, which is the aim of Taoism.
This should be the guide on how to live in a modern society.

THE TAO AND
THE
INVARIABLE
LAWS
• Human conduct should follow the way of the Ta,
which teaches us humility and simplicity; these two
virtues safeguard one from going to the extreme or
reaching the opposite.
• In order to follow the teachings of Taoism, one has to
understand what Tao means. Literally, Tao means “way” or
“path.” The doctrines of Taoism are contained in the book Tao
Te Ching, which is attributed to Lao Tzu. Instead of presenting
a philosophic system, Lao Tzu expresses a sense of the
ultimate, underlying great principle, rule, or cause of “the
way of all things.”
• Tao has several meanings: (1) the primordial
principle from which all things emanate and
which underlies all that is; (2) that which
operates in all that is and which provides the
natural way of being and acting; and (3) that
which provides norm of morality.
