Local Global
behavior behavior
Local Behavior
 to study nonlinear systems, locally, around
some special sets, a technique known as
local linearization.

 Linearization around equilibrium points.

 Linearization around periodic orbits.

What is Chua’s Circuit?

 Autonomous circuit consisting two

capacitors, inductor, resistor, and nonlinear
resistor.
 Exhibits a variety of chaotic phenomena

exhibited by more complex circuits

 Readily constructed at low cost using

standard electronic components

Chua’s Circuit
 Chua’s circuit is simple and exibits a variety
of phenomena:

 Equilibrium points, periodic orbits

 Chaos and limit cycles

 Signs of chaos:
 Sensitivity to initial data
 Strange attractors
 Unpredictability

Applying KCL &KVL the following
equations
can be obtained:-

C1   f (V1 )

dV2 (V1  V2 )
C2   iL

The equation becomes:

Where,
h(x)  x  bx 0.5(a  b)(| x 1|  | x 1|)
Equilibrium points
 Rate of evolution of the system is zero
.
X 0
Stability

Stability of linear systems is determined by

eigenvalues of Jacobian matrix.

If Re(λ)<0 => Stable

If Re(λ)>0 => Unstable

Equilibrium points(Chua’s ckt)
The circuit can be divided into three regions :

Thus we have three equilibrium points :

P+=(k,0,k)
P=(0,0,0)
P-=(-k,0,-k) where k=(b-a)/(1+b)
Stability
The Jacobian matrix is given by:

 h( x)  1 
J ( x)   1 1 1 

The eigen values for  = 10 and  = 14.3 for each eqilibrium
point is
 p   3 . 94 , 0 . 19  j 3 . 05
 0  2 . 22 ,  0 . 97  j 2 . 71

Attractor
An attractor is a set towards which a
dynamical system evolves over time.

1. Fixed points: stationary solutions

2. Limit cycles: periodic solutions

3. Quasiperiodic orbits: periodic solutions with at

least two incommensurable frequencies

4. Chaotic orbits: bounded non-periodic solutions
