Education

Meaning:
The meaning of education in common
usage is “delivery of knowledge, skills
& values
The word education is derived from
Latin word educare (means “bring up”)
& ducere (means “to lead”). In Sanskrit
language, Shiksha or Vidhya words are
used to refer education. Which means
“to discipline” & “to know”
respectively.
Education as acquisition of knowledge.
Education as a tool to discipline the
intellect
Education as a preparation for life
Education as direction
Education as growth
Education as transmission of culture
Definition:
Tagore defined education as “enabling
the mind to find out the ultimate truth
which emancipates us from the bondage
of dust”.
Mahatma Gandhi defined “education
as mental, moral, social, physical &
intellectual development of children”.
Aristotle viewed education as “creation
of sound mind in sound body”.
Aims:
The first & foremost aim of education is
to ensure the progressive development
of natural abilities in a child.
To root moral values in the children as
it help them in having superior ideas &
better vision of living their life.
Formation of good character in a
person.
Making individuals responsible toward
the society.
Ralph Tyler: Summarized the aims of
education as:
Developing self-realization
Making individuals literate
Encouraging social mobility
Providing the skills & understanding
necessary for productive employment
Furnishing tools required for making
effective choices regarding material &
nonmaterial things & services.
Furnishing the tools necessary for
continued learning
Ronald Doll: mentioned the aims of education
as per the various dimensions of human life

Intellectual dimension:
Education focuses on the acquisition &
comprehension of knowledge, problem
solving, skills & various levels & methods
of thinking.
Social Personal dimension:
Education is concerned with person-to-
society, person-to-person
Productive dimension:
In this education concern and allow the
individual to function in the home, on job &
as a citizen & member of the larger society
Physical dimension:
Education aims to develop and maintain
strong & healthy bodies.
Aesthetic dimension:
Education aims to help an individual in
dealing with values & appreciation of the
arts.
Moral dimension:
Education aims to help an individual in
dealing with values & appreciation of the
arts.
Spiritual dimension:
Education aims to help an individual in
dealing with the recognition & belief in the
divine
Functions of Education:
The transfer of knowledge from school
to the real world is something that
happens naturally as a consequence of
possessing that knowledge, hence it is
function of education.
Formation of healthy social &/or
formal relationship among & between
students, teachers & others.
Capacity (ability) to seek out
alternative solution & evaluate them
(problem solving)
Knowledge of moral practices & ethical
standards acceptable by society/culture
