Puberty is the time in life when a boy or girl
becomes sexually mature. It is a process that usually happens between ages 10 and 14 for girls and ages 12 and 16 for boys. It causes physical changes, and affects boys and girls differently. SOME COMMON PERSONAL HEALTH ISSUES AND CONCERNS THAT HAPPEN TO MANY TWEENS OR PRETEENS HEIGHT AND WEIGHT - When you start puberty, you are sure to experience changes in your height and weight. - The differences in your rate of growth and development depend on your genes or what you inherit from your parents. - Height and weight differences are normal occurences. HEARING -Hearing loss can result from damage to part/s and or nerve fibers in the inner ear which respond to sound. -Many recent studies have revealed that many preteens and teenagers suffer hearing impairment or are on verge of losing their hearing. This type of hearing loss is called “noise- induced hearing loss” or NIHL. It is usually caused by exposure to excessively loud sounds. - Noise induced hearing loss can result from a one-time exposure to a very loud sound, blast, or impulse, or from listening to loud sounds over an extended period. Personal music players are among the leading causes of NIHL among teens. Here are other causes of hearing loss: 1. Impacted cerumen results from the buildup layers of earwax within the ear canal to the point of blocking the canal and putting pressure on the eardrum. Cerumen impaction is often caused by misguided attempts to remove earwax. 2. Swimmer’s ear, also called otitis externa, is an infection in the outer ear canal often brought about by water that remains in your ear after swimming. Scratching or putting cotton swabs or other object in your ears can damage the thin layer of skin lining your ear canal thus also causing swimmer’s ear.
3. Otitis media is an infection or inflammation of the
middle ear. Long-term problems related to ear infections.. VISION a. Astigmatism- is an eye disorder caused by the cornea being oval-shaped rather than rounded.
b. Myopia or near-sightedness is a vision problem
wherein the eye does not bend or refract light properly to a single focus to see images clearly. Myopia is a refractive error and not a disease. c. Hyperopia or farsightedness is a vision problem wherein the eyes have trouble focusing on things that are near close to you. d. Xerophthalmia is a condition in which the eye becomes abnormally dry because it can’t maintain enough layer of tears to coat its surface. e. Strabismus is a vision problem in which the eyes are not properly aligned and point in different directions. SKIN, HAIR, AND NAIL • The skin is the largest organ in your body. Your hair is a modified type of skin which grows everywhere in the body. Your nail are also modified skin. The skin, hair, nails are protective structures of the body. • The skin protects the network of muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels and everything else inside the body. Your hair serves as a protection, cushion, and helps regulate body temperature. Your nails protect the sensitive tips of your fingers and toes. Some common health concerns regarding your skin, hair and nails a. Sunburn is the reddening and inflammation due to overexposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. b. Dandruff is a condition of the scalp marked by flaking of the skin. c. A corn is an area of hard skin near the bony areas of toes or between toes. d. A callus is a build-up of hard skin which is usually found on the underside of the foot. e. A blister is an area of raised skin with a watery liquid inside. f. Ingrown toenail is a common condition in which the side or corner of the toenail grows into the skin or soft flesh. SUNBURN POSTURE AND SPINE DISORDERS
• Your spine or backbone is made up of small
bones called vertebrae, stacked on top of another. It houses and protects your spinal cord. COMMON POSTURE AND SPINE DISORDERS a. Lordosis-refers to excessive inward curve of the lumbar spine at the lower back just above the buttocks. b. Kyphosis-refers to the curvature of the spine that causes the top of the back to appear more rounded than normal. c. Scoliosis- refers to the abnormal curvature of the spine to the sides. The curve is often S-shaped or C- shaped. ORAL/DENTAL PROBLEMS
• Your oral health can indicate clues about your
overall health. Your oral health is essential to your general health and quality of life since some problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body. a. Dental Cavities- also called tooth decay or carries, are permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of your teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes. b. Gingivitis- is a common and mild form of gum disease which causes irritation, redness, and swelling of your gums. c. Peridontitis- is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue around your teeth and destroys the bone that support your teeth. d. Malocclusion- refers to the imperfect or abnormal alignment of the teeth and the way in which the upper and lower teeth fit together. e. Halitosis- is the medical term for bad breath, which means unpleasant odor of the breath of the person. DENTAL CAVITIES
