Introduction
• Today’s Slogan, “One unit saved is one unit generated”.

• To protect and safeguard one’s future we need to save the energy.

• With the advancement in technology, intelligent systems are

introduced every day.

• Increase in the demand of cutting edge technology and smart

electronic systems. [1]

3
Introduction
• Microcontrollers today are used in many disciplines of life for carrying out
automated tasks in a more accurate manner.

• Every modern day device including air conditioners, power tools, toys,
office machines employ microcontrollers for their operation.

• They play an imperative role in the development of the smart systems as

brain is given to the system.

• They have become the heart of the new technologies that are being
introduced daily. [2]
4
Problem Statement

• Most human feels badly about changing the fan rate level physically
when the room temperature changes.

• Along these lines, the programmed fan framework that consequently

changes the speed of the fan using an incremental rotary encoder as
indicated by temperature changes is prescribed to be fabricated for
tackling this issue.

5
Objectives

• To develop a low cost, user friendly automated temperature

controlled fan whose speed can be controlled using a rotary encoder
which reduces power consumption and also assist people who are
unable to control the speed of fan from their locations.

Methodology
• Temperature sensor LM35 will sense the temperature and convert it into an electrical
(analog) signal, which will be applied to the ATmega328 microcontroller of the
Arduino UNO Board.

• The analog value will then be converted into a digital value. Thus the sensed values of
the temperature and speed of the fan will be displayed on the LCD.

• An incremental type Rotary Encoder will be used with the wireless transceiver

module to control the speed of a rotating fan or a DC Motor wirelessly using Arduino.

• Wireless transmitter and receiver circuit will be used. The transmitter circuit with
the rotary encoder will control the receiver circuit with DC fan or motor

Arduino
• Arduino is at the heart of the circuit as it controls all functions. The
open-source Arduino Software (IDE) makes it easy to write code and
upload it to the board. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
• The Arduino development environment contains a text editor for
writing code, a message area, a text console, a toolbar with buttons
for common functions, and a series of menus. [3]

Rotary Encoder (Incremental)
• An incremental rotary encoder is a type of electromechanical device
that converts the angular motion or position of a rotary shaft into
analog or digital code that represents that motion or position. It can
be used for motor speed and position feedback applications that
include a servo control loop and for light- to heavy-duty industrial
applications.  [5]

Temperature Sensor
• The LM35 temperature sensor is an accuracy sensor and the o/p
voltage of this sensor is proportional to the temperature in Celsius.
The proposed system uses a sensor which is interfaced with the
Arduino board to measure the temperature of the room. It is rated to
operate over a -55°C to 150°C temperature range. It has
+10.0mV/Celsius linear-scale factor. [6]

Motor Driver
• The proposed system uses an L293D motor driver IC to control the
motor through an Arduino board. It offers different logic to switch
the direction of the motor. It is accumulated in a 16-pin lead plastic
set, that includes 4 center pins which are connected together. [7]

LCD Display
• The term LCD stands for liquid crystal display. It is a dot matrix liquid
crystal display that shows alphanumeric letters and also symbols. In
the proposed system, LCD digital display has been used to show the
temperature of the room and the speed of the fan. [8]

Transistor & Diode
• The transistor will act as a switch and will be used to control the fan
speed depending upon temperature. The diode will control the fan
from being damaged. [3]

Applications and Advantages
• Personal computers
• This project can be used at home/industry
• Exhaust fans in hotels etc.
• Help in saving electricity/energy
• Can be helpful for disabled people
• Very economical and easy to handle by the user
