In the Philippines,OFWs were considered as
“modern-day heroes” because of the large
amount of remittances they send that kept
the Philippine economy afloat during 1997
• OFWs contribute in addressing the
unemployment problem in the country
• Oppurtunities overseas make life more
comfortable for thousands of Filipino
families
• They are scattered throughout the world
• In 2013 and in previous years, Saudi Arabia
recorded the highest number of OFWs
followed by Hongkong,United Arab Emirates,
and Singapore.
• More male OFWs in Saudi Arabia, the reverse
is true in Hongkong.
• Male workers are needed in the construction
industries in Saudi Arabia, while female
workers are employed in domestic work in
Hongkong.
• In 2014, the highest number of OFWs hailed from Luzon.
• The number of migrant workers coming from Visayas
and Mindanao taken together was only one-half of
Luzons.
• Laborers and unskilled workers topped the list of job
overseas,followed by service workers in shops and
markets.
• Professionals such as lawyers,medical
specialists,engineers and architects composed a small
number of OFWs in 2013-2014.
• Overseas workers are two types: land-based and sea-
based.

• The top three occupational categories among
the land-based workers in 2012-2014 were
household service workers,professional
nurses,waiters,bartenders,caregivers,care
takers,and cleaners.
• Asian countries receive the largest number of
OFWs followed by European countries.
