INTRODUCTION
Rourkela is one of the beautiful and second
largest city and also the second city to be
declared as the smart city of Odisha which was
brought into light only in 1954 after the onset
of steel plant. Rourkela tops the list of holding
the name of housing the modern & the largest
steel plant of India. It also works on an Indo-
German based collaboration and is owned by
the STEEL AUTHORITY OF INDIA
LIMITED(SAIL).

This place is very famous for education for it


imparts the best in the field of technology with
institutes like National Institute of
Technology(NIT) . Another important feature
of this city is about it’s greenery environment.
On 3rd March Rourkela celebrates Rourkela
day .
Each& every people of Rourkela is known as
“Rourkelite”.
ROURKELA

 The environment of Rourkela
is full of greenery & it is the
only city to win 7 times the
award for green city in
Odisha.
 Rourkela has a tropical
climate and receives high
rainfall.
 Thirty six percent of the
geographical area of the
district has semi-evergreen or
tropical dry deciduous forest.
CITY LAYOUT
The Rourkela Township is divided into two separate
townships under the Census of India as Steel
Township and Civil Township. The Residential
quarter's colony of Rourkela Steel Plant having 21
sectors on record (while in reality the Sector – 10, 11
and 12 do not exist, though the area for the same is
earmarked) is called Steel Township and the other
part is called Civil Township. One smaller township
Fertiliser was renamed sector-22, as this township is
within the purview of SAIL.
The Ring Road, connects 19 sectors and some other
parts of the steel city including old Rourkela. Other
layouts include Chhend Colony, Basanti Nagar, Civil
Township, Station Road (Bus and Railway), Koel
Nagar, Jagda, Jhirpani, Panposh, Udit Nagar,
Fertiliser Township, Hamirpur, IGH Road, Vedvyas.
TOURISM
Rourkela has three major recreation parks in Steel
Township area. These are Indira Gandhi Park,
Jubilee Park, and Ispat Nehru Park Udyaan along
with the recently inagurated Community Park

FESTIVALS
Major Odia Festivals are celebrated such as
Utkal Divas, Ram Navami, Pana
Sankranti(Odia new year), Devasnan Purnima,
Raja, Rath Yatra, Raji Karma Puja, Nuakhai,
Sarna Puja, Durga Puja, Kartik Purnima, etc.
along with other festivals such as Ganesh Puja,
Laxmi Puja, Kali Puja, Vishwakarma Puja,
Deepawali, Dola Yatra, Holi are celebrated.

The City Fest named as 1st Brahmani River


Festival in its first edition was from 1 to 3
February 2019. It showcased the rich tribal
heritage that is present in and around Rourkela
and Sundargarh District.
