WHY DO WE NEED TO STUDY ART APPRECIATION? • A person learns to become human. • It can also be our refuge to evaluate one’s feelings and acts that can transform them to positive forces in the world beset with occasional failure. • It gives us broad knowledge of our history and cultural traditions. WHY DO WE NEED TO STUDY ART APPRECIATION? • It also helps us to acquire the values and wisdom that are essential for human survival and progress. • We are able to understand and appreciate those measures of human greatness which may inspire us to greater efforts and the same time “ refine our taste and judgment”. • The study of art appreciation helps us develop reflective, critical thinking, which is important in our everyday life. THREE LANGUAGES OF THE ARTS 1. PRIMARY LANGUAGE Built into us as a part of our human legacy. This is the language of arts to which we can all respond, given the chance and some reassurance of its validity. It is built to the very center of humanity, and when it lies uncultivated, and becomes foreign to us, we become less than human. 2. SECONDARY LANGUAGE
It is made up of a conventions, the tradition
and styles, which have accumulated over the ages. The greater the number of works of arts we come to know and appreciate intimately, the larger our vocabulary becomes of these conventions. 3. THIRD LANGUAGE
Is the language in which this and the
other books on the arts are written or documented. It deals with the ability to talk about the arts meaningfully and expressively.
