STABILITY & DETERMINACY
The conditions of static instability, determinacy, and
indeterminacy of plane trusses can be summarized
as follows:

The first condition, for the static instability of trusses, is both necessary and sufficient in the
sense that if m < 2j-r, the truss is definitely statically unstable. However, the remaining two
conditions, for static determinacy , m = 2j-r and indeterminacy (m > 2j-r) are necessary but not
sufficient conditions.

METHOD OF JOINTS
SITUATION: Determine the force in each member of the roof truss shown.
State whether the members are in tension or compression. The reactions at
the supports are already computed as shown.

METHOD OF SECTIONS
SITUATION: Determine the force in members CF and GC of the roof truss. State
whether the members are in tension or compression. The reactions at the
supports have been calculated.

METHOD OF SECTIONS
SITUATION : Determine the force in member GF and GD of the truss. State whether
the members are in tension or compression. The reactions at the supports have been
calculated.
METHOD OF SECTIONS
SOLUTION:
The distance EO can be determined by
proportional triangles or realizing that
member GF drops vertically 4.5 – 3 = 1.5m
in 3m. Hence, to drop 4.5m from G the
distance from C to O must be 9m

SITUATION : Determine the internal forces in this truss by graphical method.
The support reactions have been predetermined by equilibrium equations.
GRAPHICAL METHOD
SOLUTION : Draw the FBD of the truss
using a certain scale.
Example: 1cm (drawing) = 1m (actual)
Also, establish the scale to be used for
drawing of vectors in the next step.
1cm (drawing) = 1kN (force equivalent)
