Abstract

 The technology of Electronic Metering has gone through

rapid technological advancements and there is increased
demand for a reliable and efficient Automatic Meter
Reading (AMR) system.
 A ZigBee based wireless communication module is
integrated with electronic energy meter of each entity to
have remote access over the usage of electricity.
 This Project allows the short range of an individual node
to be expanded and multiplied, covering a much larger
area.

EXISTING SYSTEM:

 Conventional reading is suitable for a yearly reporting and

billing.
 Service technicians arrange target dates with the inhabitants in
the flats, read out the displayed values on the different meters.
 These values will be then sent to the billing centre after a time
period in order to generate the bills.
 The inhabitant should be also present to allow the service
technician to read out the meter values, which is non-
convenient.
 The manual reading out leads also to errors.

Disadvantages of Present System:

 Meter reader has to visit the place every month.

 The reading is to be fed into the computer.
 The bill generated is to be sent.
 The consumer pays the amount at the electricity board office.
 The consumer will have to stand in long queue for making
payment.
 Delay in initiating action for non-payment.

Why ZigBee Based Energy
Metering?

 Low Cost
  High throughput and low latency for low duty-cycle
applications .
 Low Power Consumption (battery life ranging from months to
years).
 Addressing of number of networks with the help of address
devices up to 64 bit.
 Secure.
 Supports large number of nodes.

ZIGBEE MODULE:

 ZigBee is the name of a specification for a suite of high level communication

protocols using small, low-power digital radios based on the IEEE 802.15.4
standard for wireless personal area networks (WPANs).

Calculation of Pulses & Unit:

 There are two pulse rates of energy meter first is 1600

imp/kwh and second is 3200 imp/kwh. So here we are using
3200 imp/kwh pulse rate energy meter.
 Pulse= (Pluse_rate*watt*time)/ (1000*3600)
 So pulses for 100 watt bulb in 60 seconds, with energy meter
of 3200 imp/kwh pulse rate can be calculated as below:
 Pulses=3200*100*60/1000*3600
 Pulses = ~5.33 pulse per minute

15
 Power factor of a single pulse, means how much electricity will be consumed
in one pulse:

 PF= watt/(hour*Pulse)
 PF=100/60*5.33
 PF=0.3125 watt in a single pulse

 Units= PF*Total pulse/1000

 Total pulses in an hour is around 5.33*60=320

 Units = 0.3125*320/1000
 Units = 0.1 per hour

 If a 100 watt bulb is lighting for a day then it will consume

Units =0.1*24
Units = 2.4 Units

Advantages :

 Wireless System .
 Metering can be easily done from remote
place.
 Data will not be lost in power failure condition.
 Support Multiple node.
 Low Power consumption .

Conclusion:

 To overcome from the Issues with Stand-alone meter reading

which are highly Person dependant and human errors cannot be
avoided.
 Zigbee based energy monitoring system is the technology
of automatically collecting consumption, diagnostic, and
status data from energy metering devices at remote distance.
