Electrical Installation and Maintenance NC-II

Lighting Fixtures
Fluorescent Lamp (FL)

A fluorescent lamp or fluorescent tube is a gas-discharge lamp that uses

electricity to excite mercury vapor. The excited mercury atoms produce short-wave
ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor to fluoresce, producing visible light.
Lighting Fixtures

A light fixture is an electrical device used to create artificial light or illumination.

A luminaire is a lighting fixture complete with the light source or lamp, the
reflector for directing the light, an aperture (with or without a lens), the outer shell
or housing for lamp alignment and protection, an electrical ballast, if required, and
connection to a power source
Compact Fluorescent Lamp
(CFL)

A Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL), also known as a compact fluorescent

light bulb, is a type of fluorescent lamp. Many CFLs are designed to replace an
incandescent lamp and can fit in the existing light fixtures formerly used for
incandescents.
Recessed type Fluorescent
lamp

A recessed light or downlight (also pot light in Canadian English, sometimes

can light [for canister light] in American English) is a light fixture that is installed
into a hollow opening in a ceiling. When installed it appears to have light shining
from a hole in the ceiling,
The protective housing is concealed behind a ceiling or wall, leaving only the fixture
itself exposed. The ceiling-mounted version is often called a "downlight".
Incandescent
Lamp

Frosted and Clear

The incandescent light bulb, incandescent lamp or incandescent light globe

is a source of electric light that works by incandescence, (a general term for
heat-driven light emissions which includes the simple case of black body radiation).
An electric current passes through a thin filament, heating it until it produces light.
The enclosing glass bulb prevents the oxygen in air from reaching the hot filament,
which otherwise would be destroyed rapidly by oxidation.

Flood light Halide

A High-intensity discharge (HID) lamp is a type of electrical lamp which produces
light by means of an electric arc between tungsten electrodes housed inside a
translucent or transparent fused quartz or fused alumina tube. This tube is filled with
both gas and metal salts. The gas facilitates the arc's initial strike.
Mercury Lamp

Blended type High Pressure Reflex Coating

A mercury-vapor lamp is a gas discharge lamp which uses mercury in an excited

state to produce light. The arc discharge is generally confined to a small fused quartz
mounted within a larger borosilicate glass bulb. The outer bulb may be clear or
coated with a phosphor;

Industrial High Bays (MDK) Industrial High Bays (MDK)

Metal halide lamps, a member of the high-intensity discharge (HID) family of lamps,
produce high light output for their size, making them a compact, powerful, and efficient
light source. Originally created in the late 1960's for industrial use, metal halide lamps
are now available in numerous sizes and configurations for commercial and residential
applications. Like most HID lamps, metal halide lamps operate under high pressure and
temperature, and require special fixtures to operate safely.
Sodium Lamp
(Exterior)
A sodium vapor lamp is a gas discharge lamp
which uses sodium in an excitedstate to
produce light. There are two varieties of such
lamps: low pressure and high pressure.

•Low pressure sodium (LPS) lamps, also known as sodium oxide (SOX) lamps, consistof an outer
vacuum envelope of glass coated with an infrared reflecting layer of indium tin oxide

•High pressure sodium (HPS) lamps are smaller and contain additional elements such as
mercury, and produce a dark pink glow when first struck, and a pinkish orange light when warmed.
Ultraviolet (UV
Lamp)

Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than

that of visible light, but longer than X-rays. It is named because the spectrum consists
of refrangible electromagnetic waves with frequencies higher than those that humans
identify as the color violet.
Laser Lamp (Optical Fiber)

A laser is a device that emits light (electromagnetic radiation) through a process

called stimulated emission. The term "laser" is an acronym for Light Amplification
by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Laser light is usually spatially coherent, which
means that the light either is emitted in a narrow, low-divergence beam, or can be
converted into one with the help of optical components such as lenses.
Types of Lighting Fixtures
Chandelier

A chandelier is a branched decorative

ceiling-mounted light fixture with two or
more arms bearing lights. Chandeliers
are often ornate, containing dozens of
lamps and complex arrays of glass or
crystal prisms to illuminate a room with
refracted light.
Sconce

A sconce is a type of light fixture

affixed to a wall in such a way that
it uses only the wall for support, and
the light is usually directed upwards.
It does not have a base on the
ground. The word applies both to
traditional forms of torch lighting, but
also to modern gas and electric light
sources affixed in the same way.
Solar
Lamp

A solar lamp is a portable device composed

of an incandescent or LED, a solar panel
and a small rechargeable battery.

It can be used as outdoor (lawn and garden,

Indoor (desk lamp) with a brightness equal
to 40 watts.

Discharging time is generally 8 – 10 hours.

High Bay
Lighting

High bay - typically used for

general lighting for industrial
buildings
Emergency
Light

An emergency light is a battery-backed

lighting device that comes on
automatically when a building experiences
a power outage or in the event of fire.
Emergency lights are standard in new
commercial and high occupancy
residential buildings, such as college
dormitories. Most building codes require
that they be installed in older buildings as
well.
Balance – arm
lamp

A balanced-arm lamp is a lamp

with an adjustable folding arm which
is constructed so that the force due to
gravity is always counteracted,
regardless of the position of the arms
of the lamp.
Search Light (spot
light)

A searchlight is an apparatus with

reflectors for projecting a powerful
beam of light of approximately
parallel rays in a particular direction,
usually devised so that it can be
swiveled about.
Street light

A street light, lamppost, street lamp,

light standard or lamp standard, is a
raised source of light on the edge of a
road, turned on or lit at a certain time
every night. Modern lamps may also have
light-sensitive photocells to turn them on
at dusk and off at dawn, or activate
automatically in dark weather. It is also
not uncommon for street lights to be on
posts which have wires strung between
them, such as on telephone poles or utility
poles.
Strobe Light

Strobe light or stroboscopic lamp,

commonly called a strobe, is a device
used to produce regular flashes of light.
It is one of a number of devices that can
be used as a stroboscope. The word
originated from the Greek strobos,
meaning "act of whirling."
Torch Lamp
A torch lamp (tour-she-AIR or tour-SHARE),
or torch lamp, is a lamp with a tall stand of
wood or metal. Originally, torchieres were
candelabra, usually with two or three lights.

Today, torchiere lamps use fluorescent or

halogen light bulbs. Halogen torchieres usually
have a TRIAC dimmer circuit built into the stem.

Halogen torchieres have been banned in some

places, such as dormitories, because of the large
numbers of fires they have caused. Halogen bulbs
operate at high temperatures and the tall height of
the lamps bring them near flammable materials,
such as curtains.
Recessed
