Span of Control
Span of control refers to the number of subordinates a supervisor has.

Wipro Limited has narrow span of control. Fifteen-Twenty people report to one manager for
a particular division.

Chain of Command
Clearly laid down reporting channel in the division

Decision passes through a serial of approvals in a hierarchical manner

Decision pertaining to specific functions is communicated to all members in the team by


following a hierarchical protocol
Unity of Command
An employee reports to one or multiple supervisors depending on the project.

An employee may also report to one or multiple supervisors for the same project. (Varied
across the duration of the project according to the need)

The organization follows a decentralized system of decision-making

Decision Making is distributed across various functions


Type of Organizational Structure
The organizational structure in case of Wipro Limited follows a combination of hierarchical
structure and functional form.

Wipro follows a Bureaucratic organisational structure. They follow a subtle form of


bureaucracy with an open, informal work culture and flexible management practices

down.

Recommendations
• Cross-functional teams work in silos. There is need to create collaborative
environment where cross-functional teams can work together

• Less standardization of procedures should be encouraged and employees should


be empowered for decision-making. This can reduce time spent in following
excessive hierarchical procedures and can help to respond quickly in case of
dynamic/volatile environment

• Dynamic network of teams should also be encouraged

• Employees should be encourage to perform cross-functional tasks
