Global QOS Overview

Global Quality Operating System

MODULE OBJECTIVE
Upon completion of this module, you should be able to describe Ford Motor
Company’s strategy for driving quality improvement through the Global
Quality Operating System (GQOS) and the framework provided by GQOS.
Global QOS Overview
Introduction
The Global Quality Operating System (GQOS) responds
to quality improvement priorities through improved global
processes.

2
Global QOS Overview
Process Adherence is a Key Enabler for Quality Improvement

 Quality issues frequently arise when processes / requirements are not

followed, which may occur for a number of reasons:
 Poor documentation and communication,
 Lack of understanding
 Inconsistent application

 Knowledge of and adherence to requirements provides major benefits:

 Products and services are designed and developed in a consistent,
disciplined manner as intended, leading to overall quality
improvement
 Potential weaknesses in defined requirements can be identified
and corrected, with updates documented in the Global QOS,
leading to continuous improvement

 In summary, disciplined process execution and metric-driven

improvement delivers value and eliminates waste.

Global QOS Overview
Introduction (continued)
Key process requirements are documented through:
• Policies establish an overall company direction
• Standards provide a collection of related requirements applicable through
a common process to affected organizations with diverse responsibilities
• Procedures define minimum mandatory requirements for key elements of
a process; may be applied corporate-wide, organizationally, or locally
• Processes detail a repetitive sequence of logically
connected activities which are intended to
produce added value for the customer
• Guidelines recommend a course of action
or desired method of conduct to provide
guidance for a set of deliverables
• Instructions document the detailed
steps of processes, generally written
at the local level of the organization
The management process documents key process requirements and
addresses ISO requirements. 4

FAP01-001 (Creating, Approving and Controlling Procedures), FAP01-001

Creating,
establishes the control process for Ford Automotive Approving, and
Controlling
Procedures and includes the following content parameters: Procedures

• Describe specific actions on processes involving

multiple Ford organizations (who is required to do
what by when)
• Define interface responsibilities, deliverables, and
timing
• Specify detailed methods used to accomplish
deliverables when a standardized approach is critical
to the execution of the process

Note: To ensure that the intent of GQOS is met, FAP01-001 also applies to creation and
maintenance of Divisional and Local procedures.

6-Sigma Requirements in the Global QOS
FAP 07-005 Consumer Driven Product Development, Failure Mode
Avoidance and Continuous Product and Process Improvement
• Establishes the requirements to execute DFSS and the Reliability &
Robustness Engineering Tools for both Forward Model and
Current Model design activities.

FAP 07-004 Corrective and Preventive Actions

• Establishes the requirements to use DFSS,
DMAIC +R and G8D for problem solving.

FAP 03-005 Current Model Concern

Prioritization & Resolution
• Establishes the requirements and process Do
to properly prioritize Current Model concerns.

Global QOS Overview
How do GQOS Requirements Relate to my Organization / Function ?

Employees of each organization must review the

GQOS requirements to determine how their
function/activity supports the delivery of the quality
requirements.

Corporate Applicability Matrix

 The applicability of GQOS requirements is
“mapped” by CBG/Brand at the “corporate” level
 The “Applicability Matrix” documents present
conformance to specified requirements
 Future “standardization” of requirements will
drive additional applicability/conformance

8
Global QOS Overview
Introduction (continued)
Operationally, GQOS:
• Helps employees understand their role
• Establishes objectives that drive toward industry
leadership
• Cascades objectives throughout organizations to
deliver on objectives
• Requires a regular review cadence
• Ensures a focus on meeting or exceeding customer
expectations

Global Quality Manual
The Global Quality Manual defines the framework for GQOS and
provides a source of reference for all employees to gain an
understanding of the scope and application of GQOS across the
organization.
The manual contains three chapters:
1. Global QOS Overview (GQOS)
2. Forward Model QOS (FMQOS)
3. Current Model QOS (CMQOS)

11
Global QOS Overview
Introduction to the Global QOS (continued)
GQOS is comprised of two linked systems:
1. Forward Model QOS (FMQOS) highlights critical-to-
quality process steps between “Program Approval” and
“OK-to-Buy” (www.gpdsonline.ford.com)
2. Current Model QOS (CMQOS) defines processes that
improve business efficiency and product quality
between “OK-to-Buy” and the “End of Vehicle Useful
Life” (www.quality.ford.com/gqos_gqm/cur_model/)

Launch Quality
Revenue and market share are influenced by retail consideration of our
products. Unfortunately, consumers consistently identify poor quality is as a
reason to avoid or reject our products.

Functioning as an element of the Global Product Development System

(GPDS), the Launch Quality Operating System (LQOS) provides a bridge
between FMQOS and CMQOS, which should lead to improved current
model quality at product launch.

Who is responsible?

While the tools and methodologies vary by

function, we are “all” responsible for delivery of
high quality products at launch.
1. Product Development follows GPDS
throughout vehicle design.
2. Manufacturing Process Engineering develops
processes required to manufacture new
designs as part of LQOS.
3. Suppliers apply Q1 and Purchasing STA
guidelines.
4. Manufacturing applies CMQOS

Obtain applicable work instructions from quality

representatives at the plant for use “on-the-job.”

These plant-specific resources are typically

stored on a shared drive within the plant.
