1. INTRODUCTION

What is Profibus?

Profibus is a fieldbus communication standard. Derived from

the words PROcess Field BUS

It established itself in the industrial world in the late 1990s and thanks
to the support of companies such as Siemens, Beckhoff, WAGO and
Bosch, it has become the most successful field bus-based network in
the world.
2.DEFINITION

It is a transparent communication via segment couplers between the

PROFIBUS PA automation bus and the PROFIBUS DP industrial automation
bus. Power and data transmission in the same pair of cables based on IEC
61158-2 technology.

PROFIBUS uses a protocol implemented in layer 2 of the OSI model. The

control of access to the medium or MAC is based on the principle of
communication Master - Slave (active station - passive station), and
between Masters through Token passing
There are two variants of the decentralization level: PROFIBUS DP (Distributed I /
O) for the decentralization of signals and controllers; and PROFIBUS PA, suitable for
connection of field instrumentation and actuators in normal environments

PROFIBUS DP
It is applicable in control systems where access to distributed I / O devices is
emphasized and replaces conventional 4 to 20 mA, HART or 24 volt
transmissions. It uses the standard interface of the physical layer of
communication RS-485 or optical fiber. It requires less than two minutes to
transmit 1 Kbyte of I / O and is used primarily in industrial automation
systems.
PROFIBUS PA

It meets the requirements of industrial automation, where automation

systems and process control systems are connected with field equipment
such as pressure and temperature transmitters, converters, positioners, etc.
It can also replace the standard 4-20 mA.
3 basic rules for making Profibus cabling

Correct use of Terminations

 For trouble-free operation on the PROFIBUS-

DP, the bus cable must be terminated at both
ends with terminating resistors.

 The bus cable from the first station to the

last station should be treated as a single bus
cable.

 The bus terminators must be connected to

the first (for example, the master) and the
last station (slave)
 This in practice is achieved with the terminals that you can buy from Siemens
or from other manufacturers:
 That is, what you will do is exit from the PLC with your cable and you will
connect all the remote stations or slaves, making a series between them

 As you can see, in the connector there is an ON / OFF

 Therefore, at the ends (typically the PLC and one of the
remote ones) we will turn the selector ON.

Observation

This implies that if there is a remote connected to the output, and

the resistance is turned ON, that part of the branch is totally isolated.
Bus power

 The bus has to be powered from at least one end.

 This forces one of the ends (if not both) to be active in this regard and
therefore feed the network.

Termination wiring

 The following image details how the cable must be stripped to make a
correct connection of the terminal.
Which connector to choose?

 There are many types of connectors: straight, angled, with PC connection,

pinched, screwed

Bent
In general, the exit is more comfortable angled for me to be able to put the Profibus
cable through the channels in a more natural way than not going straight.

PC output
This is a must if you use the MPI and Profibus connection (on a Siemens 2DP PLC)
Maximum and Minimum Distances

 The entire loop of the network cannot be as long as we want.

 If we go over, we may have communication problems.

There is a close relationship between loop length and

bus speed

In this table you can see

some of the available
speeds, although not
all, such as 3 or 6
Mbits / s.
Cable Shielding

There are companies that do not consider the CEM as basic standards for making
Profibus cabling.

CEM = Electro Magnetic Compatibility

The high frequencies emitted by power equipment such as variable speed

drives can give you many headaches if you do not take into account
certain basic rules:
Connection of The screen to Ground

The connection of the screen is also one of the

basic standards for making Profibus cabling.
