DECIMALS INTRODUCTION

MATH CLASS
Live session 1
What is a decimal?
In algebra, a decimal number can be defined as a
number whose part and the fractional part is
separated by a decimal point. The dot in a
decimal number is called a . The digits following
the decimal point show a value smaller than one.
How fractions and decimals are
related?
•As  we talked at school, fractions represent a
division, in which the line that divides the
numerator and denominator it also represents the
division symbol. For example:

= 0.57
When we talk about decimals we will
also have a fraction but the
denominator will always be base 10. We
can have other denominators but
during these weeks we will only see this
type. For example:

= 0.4 = 0.001

= 0.08
Place Value of Decimals
• As we know, decimals are made up a whole
part and a decimal part divided by a decimal
point. Whole numbers have the place value
that we already know, but with decimals there
will be a little difference. Today we will learn
the tenths.
TENTHS
• This place value we can find it in the decimal
part next to the decimal point.
Examples
•
= 0.2 (Two tenths)
= 0.5 (Five tenths)
= 0.8 (Eight tenths)
