B. Developmental Activities

1. Presentation

This place value chart of whole number can be extended to

help you to read and write decimal number.
2. Performing the Activities

Angel used 0.35 meter of lace for a Barbie doll’s dress.

Do you know what 0.35 means?
Study how 0.35 is written on the place value chart. Study the
chart below.

In 0.35, the digit 0 is a place holder for the ones place.

The digit 3 is in the tenths place.
To get the value of 3,divide 3 by 10 because it is in the tenths
place
3÷10=0.3 ,so the value is 0.3
The digit 5 is in the hundredths place.
To get the value of 5, divide 5 by 100 because it is in the
hundredths place 5÷100=0.05, so the value is 0.05
Hence, 0.35 means 3 tenths and 5 hundredths.
The decimal point separates the whole numbers from
the decimal numbers.

2. Processing the Activities

In 0.64 what is the place value of 6?

Tenths place
How we will get the value of 6?

6÷10= 0.6
Very good! The value of 6 is 0.6
What is the value of 4

To get the value of 4 we will divide 4 by 100, so the Hundredths place

answer or the value of 4 is 0.04

Another example
In 0.58 what is the place value of 5?
tenths
What we will do to get the value of 5?
divide 5 by 10
Very good! 5÷10 = 0.5

What is the place value of 8? hundredths

To get the value of 8 we will divide 8 by100 so the answer

or the value of 8 is 0.08
3. Reinforcing concept and skills

Lance walked a distance of 0.95 km in going to school.

How do you read and write 0.95?

In expanded form, it means 0.9 + 0.05. It is written as 0.95. The decimal 0.95 is read as ninety-five hundredths.

When reading decimal numbers, read as whole number and say

the place value of the last digit. The decimal point is read as
“and”.
Example
0.8 is read as eight tenths
5.3 is read as five and three tenths

4. Summarizing the lesson.

What is the place value of the number after the decimal

point? The number after the decimal point is called
tenths.

What is the place value of the second digit to the right of

the decimal point? The second digit to the right of decimal point is
hundredths.
How do we read and write decimal numbers through
hundredths? When reading decimal numbers, read as whole
number and say the place value of the last digit.
For example, how do you read this number?
0.2 Two tenths
1.8 One and eight tenths
0.27 Twenty-seven hundredths

When we write numbers, decimal place of each digit is
