LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 4

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the Grade 4 students must be able to:
 Understand the concept of place value through millions.
 Identify the value of digits in numbers up to the millions place.
 Apply place value concepts to solve mathematical problems.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Place Values and Values through Millions
Skills: Understanding the concept of place value through millions
Identifying the values of digits in numbers up to the millions place.
Values: Understanding, Accuracy, and Patience, Obedience
Materials: Visual aids, chalks/ marker, eraser, place value chart
Reference: Math for Smart Learners 4 book, Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs),
Internet.
III. PROCEDURE
DAY 1
A. PRIMING ACTIVITY
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Classroom Management
d. Checking of Attendance
e. Recall
● What is the smallest place value?
● Who can tell me the place value of the underlined digit in the number 10 143?
f. Motivation

B. LESSON PROPER
1. Activity

● The class will be divided into two teams. Each team will be provided with a large
place value chart on the board. Call out a number up to the millions place and
have the teams race to write the number in the chart. The first team that writes
the numbers correctly wins.

PERIOD MILLIONS THOUSANDS UNITS

Hundred Ten
Place Value Millions Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
Thousands Thousands
624 305 6 2 4 3 0 5
1 094 678 1 0 9 4 6 7 8

2. Analysis
● What did you do to identify the place value of a number?
● Why is the position of a digit on a given number important?
By recognizing the significance of the position of a digit, we can read, write,
compare, and manipulate numbers accurately. It enables us to comprehend the
magnitude of numbers and perform operations like addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division with precision.
DAY 2
A. PRIMING ACTIVITY
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Classroom Management
d. Checking of Attendance
e. Recall
● What is the next place value after hundred thousands?
● Who can tell me the place value of the underlined digit in the number 102 143?
f. Motivation
 Place Value Riddles:
Divide the class into teams and post two place value riddles on the board. The first team
who finished and answered correctly will be the winner.

B. LESSON PROPER
3. Abstraction
● Place Value through Millions
It refers to the understanding and representation of numbers up to the millions place
value. The position of a digit in a number determines the value of a digit and this is
called place value. In the place value system, each digit's position in a number
corresponds to a specific place value, indicating the worth of that digit.

Example 1:
EDSA is one of the busiest streets in Metro Manila. It is about 23 800 meters
long. What is the place value of each digit in the number?
Answer:
Digit 2 is in the ten thousands place.
Digit 3 is in the thousands place.
Digit 8 is in the hundreds place.
The two zeros are in the tens and ones places.

 Value of a Digit
To get the value of a digit in a number, multiply the digit by the value of its
position.
(Present the example 1 and 2 from the book on the board.)

 The Number 0 as a Place Holder

Even if 0 holds no value, it has an important role in the value of the digits and, in
turn, in the number itself. Using 0 as a placeholder makes a difference on the
value of each digit.
(Present the example 3 on the board.)
4. Application
Direction: Answer the following real-life problems involving place value.
1. Grocery Shopping:
You are at the supermarket with your family, and you need to buy
groceries for the week. Your total bill comes out to $1,256,789. Write
this amount in numerical form using place value.

2. School Fundraiser:
Your school is organizing a fundraising event, and you are in charge of
counting the money collected. After counting, you find that you have
collected $5,678,912. Write this amount in numerical form using place
value.

IV. ASSIGNMENT
Share your thoughts and ideas. Study the table showing some of the symbols used in three number
systems from your book on page 8.
If you were given a chance to reinvent the decimal number system, would you change it? Explain
your answer.
