Midterm Performance Task in ENG S213


Guideline for setting the Motion
Debate 101: The Oxford-Style Way

• MOTION: There will be one topic to be discussed by a team


with two groups (pro/con). The teacher will assign a topic.
• Each group will have a designated angle proposition
(pro/con) through a roulette.
• They will be given a week preparation for the said debate.
Teams may coordinate to each other for setting limitations
and boundaries on their assigned topic.
TOPICS:
1. Prostitution is a form of legal work
2. Gender Orientation is determined at birth.
3. White lies are acceptable.
4. Abortion is self-preservation.
TOPICS:
6. Physical discipline is a way of parental love.
7. Corporal punishment programs students to be
academic achievers.
8. To be sexually disciplined, sex education is to be
taught at an early age.
9. Face-to-face is more suitable for learning in the
21st century.
Procedure of the Virtual Oral Debate
Stage 1: Opening Remarks

• Representatives from each side alternate sharing their


points one at a time. These statements are typically
prepared ahead of time and do not involve a rebuttal
period.
• Team leader has 90 seconds to give their introduction and
explain their stand on the motion. The rest of the
members will have 30 seconds to give their one-liner
statement to support their stand after the team leader.
• That is also the time for the opposing team to jot down
points of arguments to be addressed on the next stage.
Stage 2: Intra-Panel Discussion

• Following opening remarks, each teams will have 90


seconds to discuss with their members, to lay down
attacks, and who will talk/question first.
• On this time, they must line up the questions they
may throw to the opponent team.
• After discussion, the Cons representative will ask one
question to be answered by the Pros. They do not
need to rebut or explain. They will just give a one-
strike question and may choose specific person who
will answer the question.
Stage 3: Question-and-Answer Period

• The Cons representative will ask one question to


be answered by the Pros. The Pros has 60 seconds
to answer the question and after the time, the Pros’
representative will now give one question to be
answered by the opponent.
• Representative may choose who will answer the
question from the opponent team.
• This stage will last for 2 sets of question and
answer.
Stage 4: Closing Remarks

• They will be given a 20 seconds to rest.


• This is now the time for them to prepare their
closing statement.
• The debaters deliver separate 2-minute closing
arguments. This an opportunity to reiterate their
points, sell their argument, and persuade the
audience to vote for their side.
Who will be the Champion?
• Teams scores will be announced on the day of the
examination.
• The judge will determine who will be the champion.
S/he will score based on the rubrics given.
GUIDELINES FOR RECORDING VIDEOS.
1. All teams must properly observe the guidelines of the motion.
2. There shall be no moderator. The leader of each team acts as the
moderator to calm and redirect their groups motion and set the
timer.
3. Thirty minutes (30) minutes is allotted to record the debate via
Zoom. Use of any video conferencing platforms is also allowed.
4. The recorded video must include the affirmative and negative
teams who shall discuss the same topic.
GUIDELINES FOR RECORDING VIDEOS.
5. The recorded video shall be submitted through email or google
shared drive. Following the format:
SECTION_TOPIC_PRO/CON.mp4 (e.g.) M12A_WHITELIES_PRO.mp4
6. Submission of the position paper is on October 23. While the
recorded video is on October 30.
Position Paper = 25 points
Recorded Video = 25 points
Total = 50 points
7. The position paper shall follow the format: Introduction; Body; and
Conclusion.
