Introduction
• In Malaysian hospital setting, housemen are the frontliners to
attend when there is an emergency.  Housemen are alerted
first and then followed by Medical Officers. Trauma and
medical emergencies are on the increase, and housemen
should have CPR knowledge and skills in order to be able to
implement effective interventions in cardiac arrest situation. It
is crucial to get the right guidelines and obtain proper skills in
order to perform an effective CPR.
Hypothesis
• The association between housemen who has attended BLS
course and the knowledge and confidence level in CPR
compared to those who have not attended.
• The seniority of HO proves they are more confident and
knowledgeable in performing CPR.
Objective
1) To determine the knowledge level of adult cardiopulmonary
resuscitation among the housemen in hospital kajang (those
who have attended vs those who have not attended)
2) To assess the confidence level of adult cardiopulmonary
resuscitation among the housemen in hospital kajang
3) To see the association between numbers of posting
completed and level of knowledge and confidence in
housemen.
Methodology
• A cross sectional study using a set of questionnaire to assess
the knowledge, confidence, attitude level in CPR among
Houseman (1st to 5th posting ) in Hospital Kajang taking into
account their age, gender, number of completed posting,
certification of BLS, and the duration of last attended of BLS
course.
Study design
SAMPLING FRAME
Hospital Kajang HOs including Surgical, O&G, Medical,
Orthopaedic and Paediatrics department

INCLUSION CRITERIA
• From 1st to 5th posting Houseman
• With and without attended BLS course
• With and without experience of doing CPR during
housemanship

EXCLUSION CRITERIA
• Those who have not answered the questionnaire
Questionnaire
• Part 1 – age, gender, completion of BLS course, duration of last
attended BLS course, venue of BLS course taken part

• Part 2 – Knowledge of basic life support

• Part 3 –The Confidence level in carrying out Cardiopulmonary

Resuscitation
Data analysis
• 40 set questionnaires were distributed among houseman in
Hospital Kajang in Surgical, O&G, Medical, Orthopaedic and
Paediatric department

• Only 25 completed questionnaires were collected at the end

of the study

• Response rate is 83%

• KNOWLEDGE : Out of 15 questions, 7 and
more true answers considered as passed.

•Confidence in performing CPR: Level of

confidence were assessed by numbers ranging 0-5, 5 is

considered as confident. Out of 5 questions, each 5 points
(TOTAL: 25) , range 20-25 is considered confident.

Conclusion
The research has shown that the housemen that attended the
BLS course has higher confidence and knowledge to perform
CPR.
Hence, BLS course should be provided to all the housemen so
that they are well prepared to attend an emergency situation
where CPR is needed.
