WHAT IS GRAVITY?

Clip-art by C. Coburn
Gravity is a FORCE.
It

PULLS.
PULLS.
PULLS.
EVERYTHING has gravity.

We have gravity…

but we can’t feel it.

You can try this for yourself.

Stand next to your friend…

Clip-art by C. Coburn
Can you feel the force of your friend’s body
pulling on you?

No.

Clip-art by C. Coburn
We can’t feel the
GRAVITATIONAL FORCE of
other people because we
are too small.

Now, these rocks are very big...

but they are

still not big
enough.

But what about these two rocks?

The earth and the moon.

The earth pulls the moon.

The moon also pulls the earth.

The earth is bigger than the moon…

so its GRAVITATIONAL FORCE is stronger…

but there are things
that are bigger than
Earth.

Jupiter is much bigger than Earth.

Jupiter

so its GRAVITATIONAL FORCE is even stronger…

but Jupiter is also much further away.
Jupiter
384,000 km

Earth

588,000,000 km

All of the planets have
GRAVITATIONAL FORCE…

but there is one thing in our solar system
that is so huge that it has the strongest
GRAVITATIONAL FORCE of all...
the sun!

The earth’s gravity keeps our feet on
the ground…

Clip-art by C. Coburn
because everything on the earth is
pulled downwards.
So, what would
happen to us if there
was no gravity?

Clip-art by C. Coburn
Well…
If there was no gravity we would fly off
into space!
