What is Iron

• Iron is chemical element with symbol fe [from latin

ferrum]
• And atomic number 26. Iron is a metal.
• Iron is never found in its pure form in nature. It has
been extracted from ores.
Properties of Iron
• Iron is a lustrous, ductile, malleable, silver-gray metal.
• Iron rusts in damp air, but not in dry air.
• It dissolves readily in dilute acids.
Types of iron
• Pig iron
• Malleable cast iron
• Ingot iron
• Cast iron
• Wrought iron
Wrought iron
• Wrought iron was usually made by smelting pig iron and
oxidising it with iron oxide in a furnace.
• Wrought-iron elements generally are simple in form and
uniform in appearance, and contain evidence of rolling or
hand working.
• Wrought iron is highly malleable, allowing it to be heated,
and re-heated, and worked into various shapes
• It is readily worked by forging, bending and drawing. The
wrought iron plate girder became the basic device for
building.
• Historical uses of wrought iron were decorative: fences,
gates, railings, balconies, porches, canopies, roof
cresting, lamp, grilles, hardware, nails, iron cramps,
structural members in tension (I, H and other beams), etc.
• Wrought iron is composed primarily of elemental iron with
small amounts (1–2 percent) of added slag (the by-
product of iron ore smelting, generally consisting of a
mixture of silicon, sulfur, phosphorous, and aluminum
oxides).
• Wrought iron is made by repeatedly heating the material
and working it with tools to deform it.
