I. Adding Positive Integers (Regular Addition)

B.) Using Tiles

You can use tiles to add integers.

means + 1 means -1

The zero principle states that when you add two opposites, their
sum is equal to zero.

(+1) + (-1) = 0
Solve each problem using the tiles.

Draw the tiles to help solve the problems.

5 + (-4) = (-6) + 2 =
III. Adding One Positive and One Negative Integer
 C.) Using the Rule

Rule:

Subtract the absolute values

the answer has the sign of the number

with the larger absolute value

Other Examples:
When adding many integers, try adding all the positive or negative integers first. Then add the two numbers.

1.) -7 + 14 + (-3)  2.) 13 + (-6) + (-12)

3.) -4 + (-9) + (-5) + 12  4.) -14 + 22 + 2
