Day 11

Lesson 5: Absolute Value

About This Lesson:

In this lesson will discuss about the distance of a number from 0 in a line number system or the
absolute value of a number.

Objective:
At the end of the lesson students are expected to:
a. represents the absolute value of a number on a number line as the distance of a number
from 0.

Lesson Proper:

What is absolute value?

 Absolute value of a number is the distance from 0 to the given number on the number
line. Number that is enclose within two bars denote the absolute value.

Example:
/x/ is read as “the absolute value of x”

What is number line system?

 Number line can be defined as a straight line with numbers placed at equal intervals or
segment along its length.

Example:

Source:www.mathisvisual.com/integer-addition-symbol/

Remember: The numbers in the left side are called negative integers(-) and the numbers in
the right are called Positive integers(+).

And the distance between a number in a number line from each other is 1 unit.

1 unit+ 1 unit+ 1 unit

1 unit + 1unit + 1 unit

Now we are going to find the absolute value of a number using a number line.

What is the Absolute value of the following:

a. /-5/
b. /5/

1
Solution:

In finding the absolute of a number we can used the number line.

a. /-5/ Since it is negative we are going to the left starting with zero.

The answer will be.

a. /-5/ = 5 or 5 units away from the 0.

b. /5/ The number is side the bars is positive so we move towards the right starting
from 0.

b. /5/= 5 or 5 units away from 0.

Generalization:

In finding the absolute value of a number you disregard the sign of a number. No matter how
what is the sign of a number or how far it is in from zero.

Just like a person even that commit mistakes in the other and your value to them is -5 but in
the eyes of your family your value is 5. The eyes of your family are just like the bars in the
absolute value that see your worth.

Quiz: Write your answer in the Space bellow.

Illustrate the absolute value of the following using number line system. Box your final answer.
1. /8/
2. /-9/
3. /3/
4. /-6/
5. /6/

Evaluate the following:

1. /(-5)+(-5)/

Lesson 6.1: Operation Of Integers - Addition

About this lesson:

This lesson will give information on how to add integers.

Objective:
At the end of the lesson students are expected to:
a. performs fundamental operations on integers. (Addition)

Lesson Proper:
I. Activity
The following are addition of integers with answer.
1. (+8)+(+5)=+13
2. (-2)+(-3) =-5
3. (-2) + (+5)= +3
4. (-5) + (+3)= -2

Answer the question based on the solution above.

1. What will be the rule in adding sign numbers?

II. Discussion

What is integers?
It is a number that consist of signs.

Example
Negative Integers (-)
-1,-2,-3,-4,-5….

Positive Integers(+)
1,2,3,4,5,6…..

Note: Positive integers is okay with sign or without sign.

Addition of Integer

Adding integers with the same sign

Example:
Add the following:
1. (+5) + (+2)
2. (-3) + (-2)

Solution:

In adding sign number we used the Line number system.

But how can we use the number line.

3
In adding the sign numbers we follow the steps in using the line number system.

First is we count the distance of the first number or the first Addend from zero.

1. (+5) + (+2) The first number is +5 so we count from zero to the right since it
is a positive integers.

5 units

` Second is we add two more steps to the right since the second number or the
second ADDEND is positive.

+ 2 units

Third is we count the total number of the integers that is being add.

Final Answer will be:

1. (+5) + (+2)= +7 or 7

Remember that a number with negative sign will move towards to the left.

Solve the problem number 2.

4
Adding sign numbers with different sign.

Example:
1. (-5) + (3)
2. (8) + (-5)

Solution:
1. (-5) + (3)

In adding integers with different sign still we follow the following steps.

First is we count the distance of the first number or the first Addend from zero.

Since the first addend is negative we go to the left starts from zero.
-5

Second is we go backward since the second addend is positive.

3
Thirds, we go backward from -5 since the second addend is positive 3, so the answer will be:

1. (−¿ 5) + 3= −¿2

Solve for number 2.

5
III. Generalization:

In adding integers we can also follow the rule of addition of Integers.

1. If we add sign numbers having the same sign, add there absolute value
and copy there common sign.

Example:
Absolute value

1. (+5 )+ (+3)= +8 or 8
2. (−¿ 2) + (−¿3) = −¿5

Sign

2. If we add sign numbers having different sign, subtract there absolute

value and copy the sign of the greater number.

Example:
1. 9 + (−¿ 6) = 3

2. 8 + (−¿ 10) = −¿ 2

Note: Memorize the rule.

IV. Quiz. Write your answer after the question and show your solution. Box your final answer.
Sum up the following:
1. 5 + (−¿ 5)
2. 2 + 3
3. (-6) + (−¿3)
4. (−¿ 8) + 6
5. 15 + (−¿ 11)

Lesson 6.2: Operation of Integers - Subtraction

About this Lesson:

This lesson will give information on how to subtract integers.

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
a. Perform fundamental operation on integers.

Lesson Proper:
I. Discussion

In subtraction of integers we follow the steps.

Example:
1. (8) – (9)
2. 3 – (-3)
3. (−¿ 3) – (−¿3)
4. (−¿ 2) – (3)
Solution:
1. (8) – (9)

Step 1. Change the sign of the of the subtrahend.

9 will change to -9

Step 2. Subtraction become addition.

1. 8 + (-9)

Step 3. Perform the operation. Since they have different sign we subtract there absolute value
and copy the sign of the greater number.

1. 8 + (-9)= -1

It can also represent it with the used of line number system and it is shown below.

The answer of the other number will be:

Subtract Step 1 and 2 Result

2. 3 – (-3)= 3 + (+3)= 6

3. (−3)−(−3)= (−3 ) +3=¿ 0

4. (−2)−(3)= 7 (−2)+(−3)= −5
II. Generalization:

Based on the steps, it can generate a rule in Subtraction of Integers.

Rule of Subtraction in Integers

1. If we subtract sign numbers changed the sign of the subtrahend and

proceed to addition.

Note: Memorize the rule.

III. Quiz. Write your answer after the question. And box your final answer.

Subtract the following:

1. 5–3
2. (-2) – 3
3. (-1) – (-2)
