Let’s Solve and Explain

Linear equation can be described by its equation, either in the standard form
Ax+ By=C or slope-intercept form y=mx+b . It can also be described by its graph.
Graphing linear equations can be done in 3 ways:
1. using any two points
2. using the x and y intercepts
3. using the slope and any point on the line.

4
GRAPH USING ANY TWO POINTS

Example: Graph the following equations using any two points.

1. y=−x+ 4 2. 6 x−3 y=12

Solutions:
1. y=−x+ 4
Step 1: You may assign any two values of x . In this example, let’s use 0 and
1. And by substitution, we can get the value of y .
X 0 1
Y
Step 2: Substitute the value of x and solve for y .
If x=0
Substitute0 for x y=−x+ 4
Solve for y y=−0+4
y=4
If x=1,
Substitute 1 for x in y ¿−x+4
y=−1+ 4
y=3
x 0 1
y 4 3

Step 3: Plot the points on the cartesian plane

Step 4: Connect the points using a straight line

CONCLUSION: The graph falls to the right and rises to the left.
Therefore, this is the behavior of the graph if the slope (m) is negative.

5
2. 6 x−3 y=12
Step 1: Assign any two values of x . In this example, let’s use 0 and 1. By
substitution of these values to x , we can get the value of y .
x 0 1
y

Step 2: Substitute the value of x and solve for y .

If x=0 ,

Substitute 0 for x 6 x−3 y=12

6( 0)−3 y=12
Solve for y −3 y=12
−3 y 12
Divide each term by 3 ¿
−3 −3
y=−4

If x=0 ,
Substitute 0 for x 6 x +3 y=12
6( 1)−3 y =12
Subtract 6 on both sides 6−6−3 y=12−6
−3 y 6
Divide each term by -3 ¿
−3 −3
y=−2

x 0 1
y -4 -2

Step 3: Plot the points on the Cartesian plane

Step 4: Connect the points using a straight line

CONCLUSION: The graph rises to the right and falls to the left.
Therefore, this is the behavior of the graph if the slope (m) is positive.

6
GRAPH USING THE INTERCEPTS

Example: Graph the following equations using the x and y intercepts.

1. y=2 x−4
Step 1: Find the x -intercept by letting y=0
Substitute 0 for y in y=2 x−4 0=2 x −4
Add 4 both sides of the equation 4=2 x−4+ 4
4=2 x +0
4=2 x
2x 4
Divide both sides of the equation by 2 =
2 2
Therefore, x=2, (2, 0)

Step 2: Solve for the y -intercept by letting x=0

Substitute 0 for x in y=2 x−4
y=2(0)−4
y=0−4
Therefore, y=−4 , (0, -4)

Step 3: Plot the x -intercept a=2

and y-intercept b=−4
on the cartesian plane

Step 4: Connect the points using a straight line

CONCLUSION: The graph rises to the right and falls to the left.
Therefore, this is the behavior of the graph if the slope (m) is positive.

7
2. 6 x +3 y=12
Step 1: Find the x -intercept by letting y=0
Substitute 0 for y in 6 x +3 y=12 ,becomes 6 x +3(0)=12
6 x +0=12
6 x=12
6 x 12
Divide each term by 6 =
6 6
Therefore, x=2, (2,0)
Step 2: Solve for the y -intercept by letting x=0
Substitute 0 for x in 6 x +3 y=12 becomes 6( 0)+ 3 y =12
0+3 y =12
3 y=12
3 y 12
Divide each term by 3 =
3 3
Therefore, y=4 , (0, 4)

Step 3: Plot the x -intercept a=2

and y-intercept b=4 on the cartesian plane

Step 4: Connect the points using a straight line

CONCLUSION: The graph falls to the right and rises to the left.
Therefore, this is the behavior of the graph if the slope (m) is negative.

3. y=3
There is no x -intercept since there is no x variable. The y -intercept is 3.
Therefore, the graph passes through (0,3).

CONCLUSION: The graph is a

horizontal line. Therefore, this is the
behavior of the graph if the slope ( m) is
ZERO.

8
4. x=−4
There is no y -intercept since there is no y variable. The x -intercept is -4.
Therefore, the graph passes through (−4,0).

CONCLUSION: The graph is a

vertical line. Therefore, this is the
behavior of the graph if the slope (m) is
UNDEFINED.

GRAPH USING SLOPE AND A POINT

Example: Graph the following equations using the slope and a point on the line.
2
1. y= x +1
3
Step 1: Rewrite the equation in slope-intercept form: y=mx+b to find the slope and y -
intercept of the line. This given is already in slope intercept form, where

2
m= b=1 Note: m=slope , b= y −intercept
3

Step 2: Plot the point on the cartesian plane.

The y -intercept is a point found on the y -axis.

Step 3: Plot another point using the slope.

9
Step 4: Connect the points using straight line

CONCLUSION: The graph rises to the right and falls to the left.
Therefore, this is the behavior of the graph if the slope (m) is positive.

2. 2 x+ y =4
Step 1: Rewrite the equation in slope-intercept form: y=mx+b to find slope of a line

2 x+ y =4 Given
2 x−2 y+ y=−2 x+ 4 Subtract both sides of the equation by 2 x
y=−2 x +4 Slope intercept form

Step 2: Plot a point on the cartesian plane.
The y -intercept is a point found on the y -axis.

Step 3: Plot another point using the slope.

Step 4: Connect the points using straight line

10
CONCLUSION:
The graph rises to the left and falls to the right. Therefore, this is the
behavior of the graph if the slope (m ) is negative.
