group? Which one?

C. Analysis ---------------Students answer may vary-----

1. How did you find the number of the group?

------Teacher call a student to answer-----

Very Good!

2. How did you group each object?

What a wonderful idea!

---------------Students answer may vary-----

D. Abstraction

Based on the activities that we had earlier. We will now

discuss the important terms used in “Basic Ideas of Sets”. ---------------Students answer may vary-----
Definition of Set
The groups are called sets for as long as the objects in the
group share a characteristic. An objects that
belong/member to the set is called element s ¿).

Example:
A set of appliances
-----Students Listen to the Teacher----
A set of points
A set of counting numbers

---Other example is given if needed-----

Which of the following set is well-defined?
a. The set of all large numbers
b. The set of all negative integers.

Notation and Description of Sets

Use a capital letters to denote a set.

Example: A,B,C, D and so on…

Use small letter to denote the elements/a member of the set.

----------Students answer may vary--------------
Ex. a,b,c,d ,e and so on….

List all the elements of the set in braces. {}

Three ways of writing a set.

1. The Roster Notation or Listing Method

- this method describing a set by listing each element of the
set inside the braces {}. In listing the element of the set,
each distinct elements is listed once and the order of the
elements does not matter.

Examples:

1. A={1,2,3,4} 2. B={l,o,v,e}
3.C={p,h,I,l,n,e,s}
-----additional example will be given if needed---------

2. The Verbal Description Method

- it is a method describing a set by words

Examples:
1. Set A is the set of counting numbers less than 5.
2. Set B is the set of letters in the word “LOVE”
3. Set C is the set of letters in the word “Philippines”
-----additional example will be given if needed---------
3. The Set Builder Noatation
- it is a method list the rules that determine whether an
object is an element of the set rather the actual elements.

Example:
1. A={x1x is a counting number less than 5}
2. B={x1x is a letter in the word “Love”}
3. C= {x1x is a letter in the word “Philippines”}
-----additional example will be given if needed---------

E. Application

With the same group, perform the given activity within

10 minutes. Each group will be given a different task. After
the time you are going to perform or discuss in front of the
class.

The teacher will handed to the group leader the different

activity.

Group Activity 2

A. Write a verbal description and set builder notation for

each of the following sets.
1. E={a,b,c,…….,z}
2. D={s,a,p,h,i,r,e}
B. Write the following sets in listing method.

1. Set V is the set of primary colors.
