I. OBJECTIVES

A. Content The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of

Standards sets and the real number system.

The learner is able to formulate challenging situations

B. Performance involving sets and real numbers and solve these in a variety of
Standards strategies.

C. Learning illustrates well-defined sets, ways of writing set, and sets

Competencies properties.

1. Identify elements;
2. Write sets using Descriptive, Roster and Rule
D. Learning
Method.
Objectives 3. Demonstrate mastery on writing sets using Roster
and Rule Method

IV. PROCEDURES
Working in pairs, the students will do the Activity.

A. List down the elements of the following sets:

1. Set A is a set of odd numbers less than 10.
2. Set B is a set of prime numbers between 0 and 10.
3. Set C is a set of factors of 12.

A. Reviewing the B. Determine the category of the elements of the following

sets.
previous lesson
4. Set D = {Tuesday, Thursday}
or presenting
5. Set E = {1,2,4,8}
the new lesson

Answer Key:
A. 1. A = {1,3,5,7,9}
2. B = {1,2,3,5,7}
3. C = {1,2,3,4,6,12}
B. 4. Days of the week that starts with T
5. Factors of 8

B. Establishing a The teacher lets the students realize the importance of

purpose for the groupings and identifying different groups are important skills
lesson needed to understand the concepts of sets.

D. Presenting SETS – is a well-defined group of distinct object, called

examples/ elements, that share a common characteristics.
instances of the 1. Usually represented by a CAPITAL LETTER.
new lesson Examples: (A, B, S, etc.)
2. Elements are usually represented by an italic
lower-case letter
Examples: (a, x, y, etc.)
3. Sets are notated with curly brackets.

Example: Let ‘A’ be the set of all vowels in the English

Alphabet.
A = {a, e, i, o, u}

Sets – order does not matter and do not have duplicate

elements.
Example: Let ‘X’ be the set of all letters in the word
“MATHEMATICS”.
X = {m, a, t, h, e, i, c, s}
SET PROPERTIES:
Elements - If an element a is a member of (or an element of) a
set S, we use then notation a  S.

WAYS OF WRITING SET

a. Descriptive Form
- Stating in words the elements of the set.
b. Roster Method
- The set can be defined by listing all its
elements, separated by commas and enclosed
within curly braces.
c. Set- Builder Notation
- Set is defined by stating properties which the
statements of the set must satisfy.

E.Discussing new
concepts and
practicing new
skills #1
F. Developing A. Complete the following by writing the given set.
mastery 1. 2.
(Leads to
Formative
Assessment 3)

B. Fill in the blanks.

G. Finding practical
applications of
concepts and
skills in daily
living
H. Making
generalization
and abstractions
about the lesson
I. Evaluating A. List all the elements.
learning 1. Let ‘M’ be the set of first five Natural Numbers.
2. Let ‘Z’ be the set positive odd numbers less than 9.
B. Let A = {5, 6, 7, … 11} and B = {4, 5, 6, 7, …}. Classify
each statement as TRUE or FALSE.
3. A is a infinite set.
4. B is an infinite set.
5. 9 ∈ A
6. 3 ∈ B
7. ∅ ∈ B
